Please don't yell (um, or type angrily) at me if there's already been a thread like this, but I'm still kinda a newbie and I'm just curious. How did you guys get hooked on anime? I mean, what was the first show you watched then you realised "Hey, it's made in Japan!" yada yada yada

This is my story - :p
About 2 years ago, when i was 14, my brother liked this show about some people who could glow and yell a lot. I watched one epsiode, realised that some of the characters were pretty hot (um for cartoons) and asked my brother -
    "Why is he green?"
    "Who's she?"
"What are those orange ball things?"
    "No really, what are they?"
"And he has a tail WHY?"
    "I thought he was dead!"
etc until he told me to shut up. The name of this show was of course Dragonball Z! I watched a few more episodes and got interested. Then it was taken off air just as it got good to make way for Sailor Moon. I was outraged but soon fell in love with the pretty colours and magical theme to the show. I looked both up on the web and was confused by words like "Usagi" "Anime "Otaku" and "Manga". But after a while I got it. I started watching things like NGE and more recently Cowboy Bebop. Ever since then I have been in love with all things japanese!!

Tell me your story guys !!

i don't really remember, I saw escaflowne on fox kids but never liked it cos of the horrible dub, I liked dragonball Z in that I would watch it, but I didn't think too much of it.

my first *real* anime would have to be ninja scroll, i was in town thinking of buying a cd or something and I saw it on the dvd-shelf. I thought it was quite strange to see anime on sale in my local cd store so I decided to pick it up and see if I enjoyed it, It wasn't great but it started me on the road to watching other stuff and.. well look at me now :D

Going by the classification of "first thing you knew was made in Japan" I think my first anime would have to be Slayers, followed by Ghost in the Shell and some other stuff. Prior to that I may have seen an episode or two of Sailor Moon SuperS and I'd seen pictures from Fushigi Yuugi, but....yeah.

However, if you go by the first thing from Japan I saw (not knowing it was from Japan) it would have to be one of the following: Transformers, Belle and Sebastian, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Maple Town, or The Noozles.

Well, it all started in 3rd grade when I was watching TV and I saw a Sailor Moon doll commercial. They shown clips from the show and I was amazed. I would catch it really early in the morning. I'm now in the 11th grade and I still love that show. It's what got me hooked!

    lol

Dragon Ball of corse in the erlie 80's it was right after "my little pony" some little hyper active kid with a tail. My mother use to say that if I dont calm down I'll be growing a tail like him too. :p
I remember what really got me hooked on it was like 8 at the time and i got really hurt trying to do some stunt that i saw offa DB when i jumped off my dressor and hit the back of my head on my bed frame. Well to end a long story short after leaving the hosbital my mother kidded me that the real reason I was in the hosbital is that when i jumped off of the dressor a tail grew.
And the doctor had to take it off!;) I thought that my mother was telling the truth but hey, I am 19 now.

Well, I guess when I saw a few scenes of Akira on the Sci-Fi channel a long time ago might be considered my first exposure, or a couple episodes of dubbed Those Who Hunt Elves that I didn't care for, but...

I consider Neon Genesis Evangelion the first anime I really saw (the first that I saw through) and the one that got me hooked on anime. It was in Spring 2000 when UrashimaKeitaro showed it to me.

I am not sure which one was my first, but my first exposure to anime was what YokoburiKinura is talking about. All the movies that were shown on the SCI-FI channle, I wish they would bring it back.
Than I seen DragonBall Z and than other anime on Toonami and just on cartoon Network period and that is when I was really hooked.
I guess you can say TV is my supplier until I get money to buy more anime.

...i have to say gundam wing was my first anime. Id seen DBZ and sailor moon since before i could remember, but gundam wing changed my life so much. I remember walking into my sister's room and there was a commercial on for gundam wing and i just froze. It looked so awesome! :) . Gotta love CN for what lil anime it does get, even though it pretty much butchers it...

anyway, as soon as id seen one episode i went online for hours every day soaking up all i could find, which was never enough...and discovered anime, japan, galleries, fanfiction, then yaoi fanfiction...heh heh...but thats another story. I love that series so much. I think it started airing in 1996, and even though im 14 now i still love that series more than any anime ive ever seen.

okay, enough rambling. i gotta go type a 7 page essay on some king now...stupid procrastination...

The first anime that I watched was Dragonball Z/Cowboy Bebop but that wasn't what really got me hooked. I saw Princess Mononoke earlier this year and went on the first of many anime sprees in which I discovered the good, the bad, and the ugly of the anime world. Don't get me wrong, Bebop is amazing but seeing Princess Mononoke too made me think that there could be a lot of good stuff out there that I was missing out on.

Hmmm...>>Thinks Back<< My first Anime was Tenchi Muyo believe it or not.( And also Salor Moon at the same time) But yeah I can't really remeber how I first caught on to it. I guess one day I wuz watching Cartoon Net and I saw this comercial about some series that they were gonna be showing and I thought, 'Hmmm that looks interesting, maybe I should watch it and see what its about' Then after that I started to watch more of new different kinds of series...... and that's how it all happend (*^_^*)

I actually only started getting into anime about a year ago. I remember I first watched anime when it was on TV on the Sci-fi channel. That was years ago. It was some anime w/ tanks...2 different animes w/ tanks involved. For the life of me I don't know what they were. Hmm...there was also one w/ a man w/ a sword and blue magic? Anyway that's what kinda caught my interest but then they stopped showing it and I forgot about it, until about a year ago.

To be honest I don't know why I got back into it. It might have been Ronin Warriors. I watched it when I was a kid on TV and I loved it. I heard it was coming to DVD and I got it. (Maybe that was it) I didn't really like it though. But I looked into more anime and now for some strange reason I'm hooked on the stuff.

I have 27 DVD's of anime and plan on getting more. Wierd really.
