That last answer was that he took over his son's body. Do you remember when he, as a ghost, was visiting with his wife and son at the palace? There was a demon implanted in his son's teddy bear, which came out to kill Hotohori's son. He took over his son's body to protect him. And through that, he was also able to talk to his wife and hug his son one last time (that part was so sad!)
