Anime 1979 anime version of The Little Mermaid

Has anyone seen the 1979 anime version of The Little Mermaid?

I like both the Disney version and the anime version. The anime version does have a tragic ending though because the prince marries another woman and the mermaid dies. The anime version actually followed the original story of The Little Mermaid.

I had a tape of the anime version but lost it years ago. I wish I didn't because the anime version is very hard to find.

 

I wnat to see the anime version of the Little Mermaid. I've seen the Swam Lake one (little talking squirels! ^^) but that's like it. yeah they're hard to come by, but they're sometimes played on tv.

 

um...Ihave a tape of it(it's really old) I dont know hat it is but it's not Disney

 

Oh my gosh!!! I have that movie!! :anime: that is sooo cool! yeah it is sad, though... but great movie! I thought no one else in the world even knew that existed!! hehee..

 

I thought the same thing Pantsu. I didn't think anyone else knew it existed either when I posted this thread.

 

I just hunted down my tape and I'm watching it now... I also have an anime version of Cinderella! from... 1989! anyone seen that??

 

I haven't seen the anime of Cinderella. I looked in a couple of second hand stores for The Little Mermaid anime, no luck though.

 

Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to that song she sings in the movie?

isn it when the mermaid has to kill the prince in order to return to the sea? and she doesnt so she dies?

Yes it is. The first time I saw this movie, I was wondering why it wasn't like Disney's Little Mermaid than I found out that the original story as written by Hans Christian Anderson ended in tragedy too.

 

Hmmm...i think i saw it once when i was babysitting. Those horrible children....*twitches*
Anyway, does the mermaid have blond hair and a dolphin friend? Or am i thinking of something completley different :sweat2:

That sounds like one some people we knew bought around the time Disney's came out in the theaters (they thought they were getting Disney's lol)

I didn't realize that it was already a decade or so old at the time.. Just a nicely timed rerelease (if it is indeed the same one). This would also explain the rather startling lack of clothing lol

Did everyone know that the original story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson wasn't meant to be a love story like Disney had you believe? The real story was about the mermaids quest to gain an immortal soul. You can read the original story on this website.

I LOVED that movie. It made me cry! The ending is so tragic. I watched it after the little monsters went 'to bed' (ie were hiding behind the couch)
The part were the prince looks at the hairpin after Marina jumps *sniff* is so sad. And i love her transition from tail to legs. So pretty :catgirl:

Well, it is a 25 year old anime-it's not going to look like today's anime. But it definatly is.
