hmm, this thread probably belongs in the anime forum... but Akira makes plenty of sense. I don't know how old u are. (maybe your just too young to get it.) But its about politics and is one of the few animes i've seen that has a 'message' in it. It's essentially about science going too far to achieve 'ultimate power' and how it consequencly eventually backfires on them. It's also about humans seeming inability to learn from their mistakes.
but yeah, it can get a bit hard to follow, especially at the end, when it goes rather surreal:D

Ah Akria. The first anime I ever saw.
I won't hear a bad word about it.
A great movie and that's pretty much fact. It's gone beyond mere opinion.

and yeah the subbed version is far better and far clearer. The script in the dubbed version is so damn vague.

Even though it's not necessary, I read the manga of Akira and that helped clear some things in the movie up for me. It took me 2-3 viewings before I really got the whole thing and certain issues were cleared up.

As for anime movies that have a real "message" to them . . . watch Wings of Honneamise. This is just personal opinion, but to me it is deeper (if deep is even what you can call it . . . I'm using the word for lack of a better one) than Akira (which is, honestly, primarily an action flick though I love it). I think you're dead on, poom-poom, on what Akira has to say, though.

Agreed. Wing of Honneamise is great movie. No one ever talks about it either. It's a really underrated movie.

are you talking about the old dub or the new dub? the new dub made alot more sense...
old wasn't bad..just...very hard to follow...like fittign the words was more important than translating the plot right..

nah haven't seen the new dub.
yeah the old dub script is too unclear about what's happening and just makes it harder to follow.
First time I saw it I was 11 and all I had gathered from it at the end was that I wanted(and needed) to watch it again.

New one isn't much better. It's got a few silly mistakes too...

Colonel: " I wasn't talking about Tetsuo at all, I was talking about if Tetsuo"....

The dub voices are a little more accurate, but the script isn't very well done.

you also have to take into consideration how much they were trying to shove into such a short movie...all the politics, and crap...this should have been done as a series of movies, not just as one...like giant robo was pretty much 3 movies...(or so..it's been awhile)...it would have been much more layered and coherent..

i'm not so sure that akira shouldn't be vague. The idea is that they're pushing the ultimate frontier... when it backfires they have no control, and we see through the scientist (does he have a name? i can't remember it!) that no one really understands exactly what is going on. Apart from the test subjects and Akira himself. We're put in everyone elses shoes. ie, we aren't really told the whole story and issues never do get resolved. I think it's probably better this way.
I've only ever seen the original dub, not the subed or new dub versions, so i don't know how these ones compare... This is just my theory anyway:D

hmm, just thinkin' why aren't there more theads like this one...

It fit perfectly into the subtitled version.
It's just the dubbed script I was talking about.
It's not like it isn't possible in the english language, it just wasn't written as well.

he i'm just saying there was still a lot left out from the manga...(like kenada getting the nurse pregnant..)
but yes, i understand that it was written poorly...crap...it sounded like i was defending a dub didn't it? ....doh...

Akira was also the first anime I ever saw. Funny haw that's true for so many people. I think I need to see it again.

The idea in Akira of scientists irresponsibly pushing boundaries, and potentially drastic effects is all too believable: Why the future doesn't need us. It's a fascinating article (Showed me where some of the inspiration for Deus Ex came from too :D )

And of course Wings of Honneamise was awesome.

    He did? heheh nice one.
    I've never read the manga.
I'd love to though but it's about 30 euros for each book here.
Way out of my price range.

Terrific movie. One of my favorites.

Certain members of the Odd Squad and I quote it all the time.

Heck, whenever one of us is in a tight spot in a game, one of us will always chime in with "You can't run away!"

    or...

"Hey Peter, get me a pop."
    "No!"
"DO IT NOOOOOOW!" (ala the colonel)

Akira was the first I ever saw too, it seemed so good.

    Then I watched other anime.

Then I watched Akira again, and hated it...
