How do you draw bodies for anime characters? Do you draw out the "stick figure"/"skelaton", or do you just draw it as you go? I have problems with bodies.... ._.

i know it's not the best way to do it...not really all that correct and all, but i kinda draw as i go...if i need a shape or anythign i draw it out, then draw over it...a stick fig or something i find helps a bit to keep the pose in mind...

    ...aren't men in drag. Right.

Oh, yeah, drawing bodies is pretty hard. I kind of draw, and if it doesn't look right, I change it. I find clothes hard also.

    just ignore me

I use a dummy to draw the anime body, or if I didn't have one I would rely on the anatomy proportions I made up just fer my personal use.

    How about hands?

One the body gets done, I oft times get hung up drawing believable hands...my fingers are too long or fat, or the whole palm is laughable...

Any way I could improve this "hands on"... :D

A good tip for drawing (muscular) male bodys is to draw like a crecent on it's side(sort of like the wu-tang sign). Use it as a base for the pecks, and draw the stomach coming down underneath.

after reading so many damn spiderman comics, male bodies are rather simple. it's just a tapered cone (i think that's what they call it...it looks like this \_/) and that makes up nearly the entire torso. Women's torso's give me pain till no end. I really easily draw eyes and certain angles of faces, my girlfriend loves the way i draw eyes, but the body is PAINFUL.

hands *are* impossible. Actually, if I really need to draw hands, I like to look at Ranma and Sailor Moon pics, they're pretty uni-sexual if you look in random cells, all you gotta do is make it a bit bigger.

Now that I do the skelaton to draw bodies. I found it A LOT easier. I guess I kind of formed my own easy way. I draw all torsos like \_/, but Iialways end up drawing hands last...for odvious reasons.

I draw from the head down too! Hehe, heads are like the only reasonably easy thing for me to draw. I agree that hands are evil *nodnod* -_^.

I pretty much draw as I go for the bodies. No ovals or sticks first. If I'm having a lot of trouble, I'll try out the pose in front of a mirror, and that can help! Of course, then you run the embarresing risk of having people catch you doing odd poses in front of a mirror...

I use ovals to draw legs sometimes, because they are a real *****. I also draw from the head down.

    HUMAN ANATOMY 101

Hi guys! Well i'm no expert in Anime drawing... i've drawn one or two sketches... but i've found them pretty realistic. And i have read quite a few manga/drawing tutorials.

The key is knowing the human muscles. (I practiced bodybuilding so i know what muscles ppl have) ^^ I was about to buy the "How to draw manga/anime" book 1. But i found out that about 90% of it was dedicated to teach us human anatomy. So i dismissed the book.

You could instead visit some bodybuilding site and check out the following muscles:

Traps (trapezius - the muscles that joint the neck with the shoulders - the traps are the ones responsible for SHRUGS). What i''ve seen in many bad anime characters is that people forget to draw the traps. They look rather unrealistic.

Also, the more developed the traps, the wider your neck gets.

    Try this exercise:

Look at yourself in the mirror. Shrug as much as you can, and touch the muscles you just used. There you'll have an idea of how they're drawn. Super muscular people have their traps fully developed, often to the point of looking like pyramids. You can search for bodybuilder sites and look at their pics.

Deltoid - located a bit below the shoulder bone in your arm. Responsible for moving your arms upward. Touch your uper arm and move it upwards (you don't have to extend the arm tho). You will feel the deltoid getting hard. And you don't have to be a big hunk. I weight 60kg (skinny guy) and i can see the muscles i have.

Biceps - ok we all know about this, contracts your arm
Triceps - located in the outer part below the biceps - expands the arm. People usually can't really draw the arm well because they don't know where the triceps goes. If you're not sure, try doing 20 push ups and touch your arm. The part that hurts is the triceps :D Notice that the triceps also occupies the 60% of the UPPER ARM. So if you want to look like Van-Damme, focus on the triceps more than on the biceps when you exercise.

Also, part of the biceps is located in the forearm, too. The muscle connects the arm and forearm.

    OK NOW. Chest

Pectorals - gives you the ability to do push-ups and close your arms. It connects the arm with your rib cage. When you lift your arm, the pecs expand and get flat (also happens with breasts, located in front of the pecs)

Note on breasts: They're not spheres / balloons - they look much more like HEMIspheres. Even the largest ones. Many anime drawers forget this and end up with girls that look like silicon-implant ads (get the idea?) And without a bra, the breasts do NOT stay in their hemispherical form. They kinda spill to the sides (specially if the girl is lying down).

ABS - The upper abs occupy 4 little squares, just below the pecs. The lower abs (other 2 squares that end in the bellybutton) can be only exercised by doing leg raises.

OUTER BACK. These back muscles are responsible for wide-grip pull-ups (NOT chin-ups). They occupy the back and the outermost part of the thorax. They make your back have a V-shape. Buy some bodybuilding magazine and look at the people do pull-ups. Look at the muscles they exercise.

So, when you get to know the muscles and where they "go", it's much easier to draw them.

    OK now returning to manga:

In the "how to draw manga", search for J. Dillon's manga tutorials. THEY'RE FREE! (If you can't find them, contact me).

    ------ PROPORTIONS -----------

Proportions are very important for anime drawing. I'm not sure which online tutorial tells about this. But standard people have 8 heads of height. Heroes have 9 heads of height. Chibi characters range from 3 to 6 heads of height. The reason for them to be cute is that they resemble children, awakening some kind of motherly instinct inside us. (This is why manga characters are so popular - look at the size of their eyes... as ppl get older their heads grow and their eyes look smaller in comparison).

The human proportions are like this:

    1) Head (duh!)
    2) chin to nipples
    3) nipples to bellybutton
    4) bellybutton to crotch
5 and 6) occupy the thighs and the knee
    7) and 8) use the lower leg

When you draw a character, start by the head and measure the 8 heads with a compass. Then draw the sketch skeleton (the little lines that make up the arms and legs etc) in the corresponding position. Notice that the legs do not come from the center of the body, but remember that they come out from a bone (the coxis? can't remember) so you should leave some space between them.

If you got the measures correctly, then you only have to draw the body parts, cover with clothes and you're done.

Some hints on proportions: The elbows always match the bellybutton, and when stretched, the hands always go to the middle thighs.

If you want to use the heroic 9-heads canon, just lengthen the legs a bit. But be careful not to make the thorax too small!
