A lot of the names in DBZ are either food puns or clothing puns (or so my friend, who's a big DBZ nut and studies Japanese tells me, and I believe her).

Never heard of Momotaro, but yeah, Son Goku's name (as well as his whole concept) is based on the monkey character from the Chinese legend "Journey To The West." The Son Goku in that legend also carried a stick/staff that could extend, as well as ride a cloud. In fact, there's a character in the game Marvel VS Capcom 2 named Son Son who is also based on the original Son Goku.

Mmm, I don't know about the validity of my previous statement, but I know now that Goku was a companion of Tripitaka, the boy-priest who took the sacred buddhist scrolls from India to China. There's a TV program about it. Called Monkey in the west. It's great. He might've gone with Momotaru too.
