    Anyone here into progressive metal? I love this little sub-genre of metal!! Dream Theater, Zero Hour, Pain of Salvation,Death,Porcupine Tree,Atheist...its all great. Anyone else into this type of music?

    I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, Progressive metal is kind of difficult to explain but I will try...Progressive Metal blends the attack, volume, and aggression of metal with the grandiose, pseudo-classical ambitions of prog-rock. Basically it is complex music, you know, odd-time signatures,long songs with tempo changes, Just download this song:Metropolis by Dream Theater. Maybe this will help with my explanation some more:)

    Umm, I'm a musician and I was still confused. Sorry, but could you maybe be a little clearer? Or could anyone else explain?

    And the download situation on this end is nonexistent. I, too, am more confused than ever. Could you put that explanation in a language other than gibberish?

    but, i guess, if he named bands and stuff, and you dont know who they are.....you dont...really like it, right?

    Okay, then, if you understand so well, explain this.
    How does the word "attack" relate to music?
    Explain the phrase "pseudo-classical".
    Define "prog-rock".
    Clarify "odd-time signatures".
    Tell me what is so different about a long song (which is common in every genre), or about tempo changes (which are everywhere in just about every song over a minute long).
    And tell me what is "progressive" about it too.

    That should clarify things for me.

    I'll help you out with time signatures,

    1. The top number signifies the number of beats (or counts) in a measure.

    2. The bottom number signifies the note value that gets one beat (or count).

    For example, 4/4 means that there are four beats in a measure and the quarter note gets one beat.

    7/8 means that there are seven beats in a measure and the eighth note gets one beat. Them Bones by Alice In Chains is a good example of 7/8. This is an "odd" time signature it counts like this:
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

    In this measure the one and the three get accented meaning the get the beat....

    Actually, that's not all that strange of a time signature, and I understood that part the first time. "Firebird Suite", an orchestral piece by the same guy who wrote "The Sorceror's Apprentice", has parts that are in 7/6 time, and it sounds truly beautiful. It also changes time signature to 4/4 at certain times.

    What I'm trying to say is, is Progressive metal just a euphemism for heavy metal, or hard metal, or what?

    Also, what IS prog-rock?

    Jesus, if you don't know what prog is you obviously don't listen to it.
    The best way to find out? check out some prog bands.

    Except Death. I find it pretty odd that you'd put Death in the prog metal catagory.

    Everygrey are pretty good too, you can add them to the list.

    Oh and I guess Symphoney X are too.
    Power Prog Metal you might call them.
    just to confuse people more. But it makes sense.

    I listen to Dream Theater so I listen progressive metal.

    Indeed it's hard to explain what progressive metal is like, but go and buy some of Dream Theater's old albums, like Images And Words, and you'll know what progressive metal is. I've seen some of DT's old albums for about 11-12€, but I can't remember where I saw them.

    Thank you very much guys, I was having a hard time explaining it after Novus was asking all those questions. I like Evergrey too. The Encounter is a good song. Oh and yeah. Symphony X is great and Rush is awesome. Peart rules!!

    I just accosiated it with rock in general. I love Rush. Me and my dad both.

    I just can't see how that can be mixed with metal. I'm not saying it can't, I just can't see how. Also, the reason I was wondering about progressive metal is because it sounded interesting, and I wanted to know more. I know I don't listen to it yet, that's why I asked.

    Good question you have there. This one is kinda hard to answer too. :dizzy2: but I can try to answer it. Well to me at least, progressive metal is just like prog rock except heavier. Dream Theater is a great example of progressive metal. They are heavy but at the same time they are very complex and melodic. But, if you like Rush i can see you liking Dream Theater. James LaBrie's voice is of an aqquired taste but the Musicianship is flawless. Check them out if you can. I honestly can't think of another band to compare them to. To me, Symphony X is like a heavier Kansas, great band by the way.

    Maybe you have a blindspot too. I can't download stuff here because of the way our network is set up. So unless you have a magical way of getting this music without downloading or spending the money that I don't have ...
    That's why I was asking for information. If I could have done something easier, don't you think I would have?

    Simply put, I don't. I have to hear things on the radio. Maybe you've missed the thousand or so times I've said it elsewhere, but I recently moved. I'm no longer so fortunate as to have internet access of my own. I'm hooked up to my school's network, and I can only access by going through there. It's pretty unpleasant, because anything used to download just about anything is all but unusable.
    Of course, considering that every time I seem to ask a question I get *****ed at by a self-professed metal head, just pretend I didn't say anything.
    Enjoy your little elitist "only we know what prog-metal is" clique.
