Lo all, your friendly neighbourhood inactive mod here,
I remember when i was a newbie and my anime/manga knowledge was severly scant, I didn't have a clue what was good or not or what was even there, so i was stuck watching pants MEL releases because i was none the wiser. I just thought it'd be a good idea to make an advised watching/reading list to help any newbies who are in the position i was in. So please post suggestions

I recommend Dragonball Z because it's a cool show and is easily accessible.

If you're willing to spend a little cash, however ...
    Samurai Pizza Cats
    Ninja Scroll
    Ninja Resurrection
    Vampire Hunter D
    Blood The Last Vampire
    Tenchi Muyo!

    Honourable mentions go out to:
    Ranma 1/2
    Gundam Wing
    Medabots
    Transformers

There's another anime that I'd highly recommend as one of my all time favourites, but I [ [IMG]] cannot recall its title. Maybe That Guy! can help me out, as he introduced me to it. It's that one about the high school kids who have a magic club, and they are the eternal rivals of the manga club which is next door to them ... I just can't recall its title [ [IMG]]. I saw it available on DVD in London, though.

YES! THAT'S THE ONE! [IMG]! [IMG]!

Yowzah! You just made me realize how many of my favourites I left off!

I just remembered that I forgot about Star Ocean EX as well ... there are those who would kill me for leaving that out. Well, they'd try, anyway.

    then there's:
    Star Ocean EX
    Love Hina
    Battle of the Planets
    Final Fantasy Unlimited
    Fushigi Yuugi
    Violinist of Hameln
Bakuretsu Hunters(this one has too much nudity though)

Well, I can go on and on and list every single anime. But you should try to watch as much anime as you can... And don't limit yourself to just one(like many DBZ fans do).

I suppose I ought to give my little list of anime recommendations. In no particular order,of course.

    - Saber Marionette J
    - Noir
    - Inuyasha
    - Angelic Layer
    - Lost Universe
    - Love Hina
    - Outlaw Star
    - Mahoro-matic (gotta love the Gainax fan service! [IMG])
    - Star Ocean EX (wish I had the appropriate codec to watch it,though...)
    - Trigun
    - Sorcerer/Bakuretsu Hunters
    - Shoujo Kakumei Utena
    - His & Her Circumstances (KareKano)
    - Hana Yori Dango (HanaDan)
    - Blue Seed

I hear Cowboy Bebop is good, but I've only seen the first four eps subbed (and a few of the later ones on Cartoon Network). Similarly,I've only seen 4 eps of Excel Saga, but would be interested in seeing more.

    InuYasha - mmm....fanservice....

And I made this thread sticky last night under the impression I had already put a list in here...lol...

If you have not seen Saber Marionette J and you have the chance - do! It is superb, and my most highly recommended series. It has it all! :p

With that out of the way, if you like:

    Comedy
Ranma 1/2 - Funny martial arts and gender bending
Excel Saga - not for the weak of heart, this is the most screwed up anime I've ever seen
Love Hina - A man in an all girls dorm - yes, it is painful to watch at times...:p
Slayers - Any fantasy fan MUST see this...A world of magic users with a light feel...also with a hefty dose of action.
Tenchi Muyo! - the story of a boy whose life changes when many girls from outer space enter it.

    Action
Angelic Layer - If you're a fan of tournament fighting, this one gives a real interesting take on it. Fighting involving mind-controlling dolls. Surprisingly good if you give it a chance. ^^
Cowboy Bebop - Some good sci-fi bounty hunting
Full Metal Panic! - A futuristic war with mecha and some romantic espionage. Funny, suspenseful, entertaining :p
Rurouni Kenshin - A wandering samurai's story. Very good characters and storylines... :)

    Mystery/Suspense
Neon Genesis Evangelion - gets into very deep thought once you get past the "mecha-ness"

There is a ton of anime out there, and it's pretty much all relative to what you prefer. Some like to be weirded out, others like blood and guts, and some a romantic comedy. The best thing you can do is sample - get ahold of a bit of an anime and screen it yourself. Only you can truly decide what you like. These are only members suggestions and in no way truly "definitive". Then again, if you see a member has listed a lot of anime you like, it might be worth checking out some other things on their list.

    Happy Hunting!

[More to be added as Baka has time. :p]

    Uh... Akira.
Others that I think are worthy of a mention but have as yet not recieved one(if they have I appologise as I must have missed it):
    Perfect Blue,
    Angelic Layer,
    Fruits Basket,
    Kodomo no Omocha/Child's Toy.
But it's not just anime we come here for, is it...
    Mangas you should check out:
    Love Hina,
    DNA^2,
    I"s,
    Video Girl Ai,
    Sirius Scars,
    Fruits Basket,
    and many more besides,
    And J-Pop/Rock:
    The Pillows,
    Megumi Hayashibara,
    The Ulfuls
There are many more kick *** mangas, animes and musicians than we've mentioned here, but it's a start

    Well, okay, anime:

    1) Chobits
    2) Noir
    3) Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
    4) Love Hina
    5) I My Me! Strawberry Eggs!
    6) Di Gi Charat (for those in need of nonsense!)
    7) His and Her Circumstances
    8) FLCL
    9) Ranma ½
    10) Scryed
    11) GTO and GoldenBoy (Even if only for the fact that the main characters are hilarious...)
    12) Maze: Mega Burst Space (It's like Ranma...but schizo! :dizzy2: )
    13) Photon: The Idiot Adventures (Nothin' like stopping idiots with the most powerful force in the universe..."aho" :D )

    Manga:

-I've only ever really read Love Hina (which is the greatest, not reading many others withstanding!) and Ranma ½. But some that already look good--

    1) Love Hina :)D)
    2) Ranma ½
    3) Chobits
    4) DNA²
    5) Cowboy Bebop (Looked interesting...but I only read a couple pages)
    6) I"s

    Music:
    1) Almost anything by Yoko Kanno in any series
    2) Ayumi Hamasaki
    3) Utada Hikaru
    4) Move!
    5) Snail...something (I forgot the name, but it's Japunk)
    6) Entire Noir OSTs
    7) Bubblegum Crisis OST's/Vocals

This is by no means "definitive" but it's what's the sheezy is right now. :D It'll probably change once I get a few more anime under my belt...hehehe. But those do come highly recommended.

Well instead of repeating anime that's already been said, I will add something new.

    Macross and Robotech.

I can't frickin believe nobody said these yet.

And by Macross I mean the original if possible. Yes, Plus is great, we all know. But the original is very very good.

The animation in both is simply beautiful.

Now some people will raise a fuss over Robotech because its "butchered" but you should just watch it on its own, as a seperate saga. Too many people try to compare it to Macross. It's like comparing Star Trek to Star Wars: both are good, both have great stuff, but even though they're similar, comparing just isn't something one should do.

[edit]i moved the referred to post to it's own thread as that doesn't belong here.[/edit]

[Edit...again...why must I butcher my posts like this?] That top edit there was done by BloodBerry, as i have no power to do that...dont think im a hacker! Not here im not! lol [/edit]

[edit] I CANT SPELL! YAY! [/edit]

    Anyway...

    I reccomend:

Akira (Yes, its a classic, and yes, its been mentioned before, but...)

Metal Fighter Mikuu (A show about Japanese Pro Women's Wrestling)

    Gundam MS 08th Team

    Samurai Pizza Cats

And pretty much anything on the Adult Swim except Gundam 0083.

Definitely Dragonball and Dragonball Z for newbies, its easily the only one on television in parts of NA and SA.

Cowboy Bebop comes on Adult Swm and is my all time fav...:D
