Well I've only a couple of episodes but I'm hooked, and the friends I've shown it to are too.

How many episodes/series are there altogether?

    John.

27 i think in all , then you have the 2 movies , death and rebirth and end of evangelion.
It starts getting a little weird in end of evangelion and death and rebirth tries to sort it out, kinda [IMG]

    There's 26 episodes
Movies = End of Evangelion replace episode number 25,26
And movies Death & Rebirth 2 separates (movies special) or sometimes its in the same... Death = a review of all the episodes, Death is like End of Eva...
so 26 eps, end of eva, death, rebirth

    Cool, thanks guys!

Actually I think I have them all then except Death and Rebirth.

Just a matter of sitting down and watching them...

*grin* as you can guess from the name, I've loved this series for a long time... the deal with the movies is quite confusing. This is the story as I understand it...

There were 24 full-length TV episodes made. This show was broadcast at 6.00pm in Japan on a major network, and despite the huge ratings for the show, the network got VERY concerned with the content; although there are foreshadowings of it in the early episodes of the series, you may be shocked at just how utterly DARK Evangelion gets in places. After episode 24, which is particularly dodgy in a LOT of different ways, the network demanded to see the storyboards for Episodes 25 and 26, and screamed blue murder - basically, "We can't show this on TV!".

Anno and his team proceeded to come up with a pair of really, really strange episodes, stuck together from clips of previous episodes, and then did a brief (and quite fun) original animated sequence for the end of episode 26. These two episodes, TV 25 and 26, are not the originally intended ending. They're very, very odd, and most people hate them.

The movie "Death and Rebirth" was released in Japan shortly later. This film, as suggested by the title, has two parts; "Death" being a condensed version of the series to date, and "Rebirth" being the first part of what SHOULD have been Episode 25, had the network not had a mickey fit. Death and Rebirth has been "remixed" a whole pile of times, but ultimately it's a strange filler effort, with little new footage and nothing new to add to the plot.

The REALLY interesting movie is "The End of Evangelion", which, again as the title suggests, is the PROPER ending to the Evangelion saga. This is Episode 25 and 26 as scripted by Anno, but made with a slightly bigger budget and timeframe, and it's quite, quite astounding. The ending is pure weird, and the movie is quite disturbing in places, but it's a proper ending to the series, and a very classy one. As to when we're likely to see an English translation (other than fansub) of it... who knows.

Er, and that, pretty much, is that. No second series is even talked about, and it's easy to see why when you get further into Eva. The Gainax team went on to make Kareshi ni Kanjou no Jijo (which I've probably just spelt wrong... in fan circles it's just called KareKano), one of the best romantic comedy type shows I've ever seen, and then did the marvellously insane FLCL (pronounced FuriKuri), which is, um, totally, completely mad and very, very funny. Nothing as heavy or weird as Eva... and no more giant robots, although god knows there are plenty of them in anime to keep us mecha-nuts happy [IMG]

    The noob posts:
[insight]End of Eva was rather disturbing.[/insight]

FLCL is great, I hope episode 6 doesn't go too far off the deep end (though it would be hard to top the first 5) shinji- you like the pillows?

    haha! a commander keen gun!
now that I know I exist:
I actually preferred eps 25-26 as shown on TV.

While EoE was better in every way, (production value, story, yada yada), the TV eps left me happier. The language and terms used in them were very interesting as well.

I loved the "happy world" bit at the end of Ep 26. Brought a tear to my eye [IMG]

I thought at the time that I'd love it if Gainax did a short OVA set in the happier, alternate universe... Then Pioneer did Parallel Trouble Adventure: Dual!, which is roughly that [IMG]

the End of Eva, while a very intense production, provides more fun for me. The first viewing for a friend of mine comes to mind, him screaming his head off not once, not twice, but thrice in one hour at one instance of the movie. Ahh, it provided a spiritual fulfillment that cannot be provided by the happy ending (though that provided a bit of a different type of fulfillment, more of a mental one, making me feel like an overripe melon, ready to burst)
where was I going with this anyway?
oh yeah! I wanted to say I love Evangelion! I can't get enough of it! I watch it again and again in a crappy format (as if that's not enough to convince ya'll of the point).
Great story, great fighting, great characters, all written in the prime of depression by Hideaki Anno, how could anyone not like it!

I recently watched The End of Evangelion for the third time. The first time I about screamed my head off with rage at some points, but decided it was a happy ending (I guess I got too into it), the second was better on the rage part but depressing, and this third time I walked away feeling enlightened and happy, feeling like I really understood it this time. However, I'd just had a good date so I was probably just deluded into thinking that by my good vibes.

Oh, and I should add, the TV ending gets more lucid for me every time I watch it, too. This last time I saw how Ep. 25 did have some plot elements that tie in very closely to the progression of The End.

evangelion rules, plain and simple, great story, really delves into some psychological crap!

havnt got my hands on DnR yet, they aint ment to be very good, i absolutely hated the TV eps 25 and 26, they sucked so much c**k it isnt funny. But EoE is sooo good, really really well done ending, and in some ways unexpected (well it was for me because i saw the TV ending first) so there, i ahve the entire series on vhs taped off TV, i watch it a lot, dont have the movies though [IMG], ah well, can get them easy enough, but i'm lazy :p

Must say that I did find the tv-series ending quite good, maybe it didn't suite all u "if they don't fight atleast 5 minutes and show atleast 3 blood stenches I wont watch it". u should see the beauty of the anime beyond the fighting and other "cool" stuff...prolly why so few ppl like series like lain and such (best anime ever IMAO)....but then I'm weird, ppl allways say that....

(oh, and I can never find a proper msg icon so I only take one that I like :p)

I wasn't pushed either way with the ending, i understood it. But what got at me was how long it was dragged out.

I love a good fight scene as much as the next guy and thats not the reason why ppl don't watch that kind of anime.
For a start anime is really the only type of cartoon that has real violence, real fight scenes. Ones that are well thought out and actually set up properly. Its a genre that ppl will watch anime for in specific. Look at america, might as well be all they watch!

Liken it to films , you either like or loath action flicks , same goes for thinkers and some like both.

As for evangelion, i was getting tired near the end, the fights while cool were predictable and almost followed a set pattern, like the old batman series. Still the series rocked , not because of the fights but because of the characters and the story behind them!

I know what u mean about the predictable fighs, allways the same way "- oh no, the monster is too strong, we have no chance. - Ah, but I have a plan, the chances are 0.000000000000017 %, but what the heck lets try. - yes! it was close but we did it!"

(was this text totally unreadable? then come to dalnet and I'll confuse u even more [IMG]

I love Eva, I've see it all except for End of Evangelion. I've only seen it on DVD subbed and I have a lack of a DVD player
[IMG] . I say it's the character development in Neon Genesis Evangelion that makes it interesting, the fight scenes are cool too!
