Ok, I know I'll sound like a complete and utter moron for bringing this up but, is it possible for someone to have quick enough reflexes to block a speeding bullet with a sword of some type? I mean, I remember hearing about people in the ancient Middle-East who used to be able to catch throwing knives that were hurled at them.

Would it be too far-fetched for this to happen with a sword and bullet?

Maybe those highly trained Shao Lin monks could do it...

I don't think it's possible, but maybe if the sword was really big.

Well, I guess it depends. I mean, you could shoot at someone, and the sword could just be in the way, without them doing anything to block it. And then there's the chance that the sword will break...

But no, I don't belive it is possible.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I think it is possible. Not probable, but very-well possible. But then again I tend to believe in almost anything (except religion :p). So I'm the kinda person that'll believe all those stories. Plus there are some factors you have to take into account, one of which would have to be either absurd luck or absurd skill, but if a sword was capable of taking a bullet and staying in tact, it is probable that the sword could have been previously aligned while the gun-wielder was aligning and leveling the gun to shoot. It's all about careful observation and such. About actually blocking it, I don't think they'd have the sword take the shot head on. They'd probably do something like deflection, having the sword slightly angled so that it caused the bullet to sort of ricochet.

It probably sounds beyond farfetched to most of you, but Hell, I think it's probable. After all; people can get shot in the head and LIVE. >P I think anything's possible after that. ;P

It would really depend on the gun, the bullet and the sword, never mind the skills of those involved. For example, you'd need a pretty strong blade to withstand one of those shots that can penetrate the armour on a tank to hit the fuel tank. Something fired from a sniper rifle's probably right out, especially from one of the higher-end types.

Given the speed of a bullet, no.

Even if you *do* manage to get the blade in front of the sword...dollars to donuts the bullet will shatter the sword and still hit you.

    Yeah...

Yeah possible, but not likely. According to physics you could really deflect a bullet with your hands. Its only force is in one direction so, if you were to push it from the side it would easily move over and be out of your way. Now, the problem with this is that a bullet is traveling really fast. To be able to hit it, its would take insane timing.

its not at all physically possible. no matter how the sword is tempered it will break. regardless of the gun used. no as far as catching a knife thats possible...but either way a bullet is way to fast...theres too much speed and power put behind the bullet. the sword especially the katana and the shamshir and Schimitar are incredibly strong but they would have broken. ive done tests before.

Also the fact that your "hand" has to have more force or exponentially more mass than the bullet itself. Or, you'll just tear your hand. So, unless you can move your hand at 200 ft./sec. then you're plain out of luck.

i mean...you could block a pellet or a BB but well...even thats a bit hard...those honestly are the only two real "guns" that wont break a sword when tested. anything beyond that... .22 .357 anything...and honestly...even if a bullet couldnt break a sword...its not humanly possible to move fast enough to block one.

Considering that a bullet moves at the speed of sound (maybe faster) i don't think you can block it. Nobody could have those type of reflexs.

I don't think it's a question of human speed; if you were expecting it and knew exactly where it was going before it fired, then you could probably make the bullet collide with the sword. Unless the sword was about a foot think, though, that wouldn't stop the bullet.

Okay, say you just have some massively wide sword and you're holding it in front of your face while some kind of expert marksman fires at it. It becomes more of a matter of the sword breaking. Which it would. Unless it was like insanely thick and made out of some kind of crazy alloy like they use on space ships ... but then it wouldn't be a sword any more ...

Either if the bullet was rubber or if it was quite a low calibur gun... as in a musket, with quite a thick sword... claymore, & already in the trajectory of the bullet... then yes. otherwise... nice knowing you ^_^

well the musket wasnt really a low caliber gun I would say it depends on the amount of powder used. i would have to say that a musket could easily break a sword. and i think that not even a claymore could stand against it. just to brag once, ive studied edged weapons with an point in Japanese weapons, for over 8 years now. i found the strength of a sword no matter who forged it, it will not be able to stand against a gun. even a BB gun would probably dent the sword.

A musket ball could go through several people and keep going, so you can forget about that.
