I love Merecedes Lackey! She's one of my favorite authors even though I've only read like three books. (Oathbound)

lol, your reading them like me then. I read By the Sword first, after that I would suggest reading oathbound, oathbreakers, and oathblood. It will make a lot more sense if you do. :D

...Gott en himmel no! Lackey cannot be compared to other authors, she pretty much has her own style when it comes to writing. All of her books tie together in some way, she has like, the Heralds of Valdemar series, which is towards the begining, and then you have By the Sword which is towards the end.

...No, it's not. Owlknight is at the VERY end, timeline-wise, but the most recent book that came out was Exile's Honor, which is about Herald Alberich. Exile's Honor comes before Take a Theif(Herald Skif's story), which comes before the Arrows trilogy.

I told you guys I was a big fan.

Ahh, Mercedes Lackey. Wonderful author, wonderful books. I personally think that you can loosely compare the overall story styles of her books with those of other people. For example, the Valdemar books fit into the epic fantasy world niche quite nicely, sitting next to such greats as Patricia C. Wrede's Lyra books, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders and Talents books, and (in basic genre type) the works of Joanne Bertin and Kate Elliott. Her fairy tale retellings (The Fire Rose, The Serpent's Shadow, The Gates of Sleep) fall in roughly the same time period as Patricia C. Wrede's Mairelon books and Sorcery and Cecilia.

So to sum it up in very basic terms, Mercedes Lackey writes different forms of fantasy, generally epic fantasy with some urban stuff thrown into the mix to make things fun.

If you're going to read the Valdemar books you can more or less start anywhere in the timeline with very little trouble. The first books she published were the Heralds of Valdemar trilogy, and the most recent Valdemar book published was Exile's Honor. The only books that really have to be read in order (aside from those inside a trilogy) are the Mage Winds and Mage Storms, in that order.

For those interested in Valdemerian chronology, the best place to go would probably be the chronology at Mercedes Lackey's webpage, located here.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a nut case as well when it comes to these books (as well as several other authors).

I've never Mercedes' stuff. Decided to stay away from a lot of fantasy reading after forcing myself through some Jordan, Goodkind and *shudders, repulsed* Tolkien. I find most fantasy authors tend to dwell too long on certain, insignificant details that, if taken out, could easily cut the book in half and keep the same level of entertainment to the 'fans', if not more, while increasing to the other general populace. They tend to make it too boring. I'll stick with Chuck Palahniuk, thank you very much. :)

If you wanted to know some books to read, I could've told ya, oniisan!

Though, any books I read, you're sure to eventually get your hands on.

My first book by her was actually 'The Elvenbane', co-written with Larry Dixon, I think? Anyhow, I got into the Valdemar books later. I like her as an author- she definitely shaped my tastes as a reader, I'm sure.

Wow its been a long time since I checked up on this thread. Glad to know it has only advanced to two pages instead of like 12. hmmm lots of interesting questions and comments. If it were me Old_Coyote I would start with the Heralds of Valdemar trilogy. But thats probably just because they are my all time fave. Thats where I started D3vil's Anjil, and Lethal_Angel I believe. Either that or it was Brightly Burning. I dont really remember which order they went in. :) If you do read her books though, for most of them you may want to have a tissue handy.
