The star business wasn't meant to be taken literally at all.

Just like when Spike is dying the whole room is filled with a bright white light (he died in the night, a few seconds after Vicious fell down)

just like there's doves flying around when Spike died, and when Julia died.

Just like the mars sky is shown as blue during the credits (it should be red). They made this so that they could play the song "never seen a blue sky..... blah blah".

Its just done for effect on the viewer.

CB had the greatest ending to anything I've ever seen. It was very fitting that Spike and Vicious killed each other... I wouldn't have had it any other way.

*Mind is swirling* How could you ever sit and think about it that much... I mean I do question the meaning of it too but...

Spike just dying because Vicious killed him would have been beyond wrong! But considering he got rid of Vicious and died, he could be in heaven in Julia so there. Revenge and he gets to be with his love. It isn't that bad of a way to die.

ps- Kame, a cartoon is much different. It's anime- an-im-e. More serious to say the least!

Anything of this high quality deserves deep analyzation, even if symbolism wasn't intended it often happens by accident (like every bug-eyed-monster film u ever saw. Godzilla wasn't intended to represent America, it just happened.)
But I have noticed that a lot of anime is devoid of such deep meanings and I'm starting to get used to it. CB is not just about having fun, it's suposed to make you think, but it's written like a cheesy action show, which is why I'm so impressed...
I could name a few animes (the few I've seen) and their deeper meanings, even if the meanings arn't a big part of the show.

I mean no offense to you 'Sarah of Borg', but.

That is easily one the most non-sensical things I've ever heard.

CB is about four bounty hunters flying around in space.. NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS..

First off, you dissected anime wrong. If you're going for the japanese katakana, it's a-ni-me. Sorry, but it's true.

Second, anime is not "more serious" to say the least, compared to cartoons. Try saying that to me and kame when anime companies in japan stop making series like Hamtaro, GoldenBoy, Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, etc. Then and only then will anime be always more serious than american cartoons. This, Yasuko is gross over-generalization. The only thing really different about anime and cartoons is that most anime has a definitive story-line, and thus, a lot have a definitive end. But, you're also right, most anime that is popular in these boards are usually enriched with story and are a standard above standards.

Third, Sarah, yeah, I agree that if a show deserves analyzation if it's any good. *I* am just saying that it's not so deep that it becomes something else entirely, as in your first statement. In fact, I'll just say that sometimes, overthinking about what happens in the show makes you lose perspective. I mean, if I *hadn't* analyzed the show, I'd have never come up with the alliteration for it with a Jazz song. But I can't see nitpicking any single character so much as to essentially compare it to many things. In all your posts, I never really see that "moral of the story" you're talking about. All I see is the fact that you compared it to something else. I also lack any perception of a real and definite moral in *all* of bebop. Sure, each little story arc has this little saying that Spike usually says, but I don't see them as "morals" for the most part. I REALLY don't see the point of the story when he was going against the clown guy. Other than to be very afraid of clowns.

Lastly, Sarah, it's crucified. Cruxcified is a (sp?) error. ^_^

ok. here is my explenation for the ending: :D
( i must admit i didnt read everything in the last posts, so please dont kill me if it has been said before)

    here we go:

ok, cowboy bebop is a mix of the following: sci fi, the wild west and Yakuza films. if you have seen some yakuza films (japanese mafia flicks, i anyone should be uncertain) you know how they end. Man gos out after his old gang, guns blazing and kills every one then he either dies or is deadly wonded and wanders into the night and the audiense wont know if he lives or dies.
this was the recipe for 99% of all yakuza flicks made in the 50s-60s in japan.

my guess why they made them end like that, was that even thou they had left the yakuzas or been framed by the yakuzas, they still would have done a lot of dirty deeds conciddering the life they used to live or still was living (depending on the prior plot). they then go out to wipe out all evil and offcourse, being "evil" them selves, the have to die too. (im not saying spike was evil)

so i guess Watanabe wanted it to end with some homage to classic yakuza flicks. the jazzmusic that is used in many of the sceenes in the series is also straight out og the 60's yakuza flicks.

that was my 2 cents, tak it for what you like :D

Watch what you say about Tom and Jerry. That is one kickass show! It's not that different, either.Sure they are 2 entirely different things(and I mean REALLY different),but they are both animated and humorous.Don't be so quick to dismiss things that may be deemed "for kids" at first, because they could be really hilarious.A good example of this is Rocky and Bullwinkle. This show is dismissed as childish because it's a cartoon. But if you actually watch it,you'll see that it has some really mature humor in it.

    My Opinion

Well, I just finished watching the show myself. Odd - I did weep a little when Spike died, but it might have been due to "Blue" playing in the background. That's a beautiful song, no doubt about it.

Anyway, while I don't think that Cowboy Bebop is intended to be used as a basis for philosophy classes, I do think there's more to it than some people's interpretation that it's "Four guys and a dog on a ship and their adventures." I certainly don't believe Spike is Christ or any other sacrifical hero - That's so flimsy on so many levels. He doesn't die for anyone's sins (In fact, his death can almost be called selfish, the way he knowingly walks to his death even though he knows it'll hurt Faye), he doesn't go for any reason other than to kill Vicious, etc.

But I do think that the show had a "deep meaning" in that it wanted its viewers to examine their lives in relation to how the characters do so. The obvious underlying theme is that each of the four "heroes" has a tragic past - Spike's Red Dragon affiliation, Jet's resentment at the corruption in the ISSP, Faye's accident and Ed's prolonged estrangement from her family. Each of them eventually confronts their past, and each reacts in a different way - Jet and Faye are hardly changed by the revelations they find, Ed decides a life change is in order, and Spike feels his past is worth confronting head-on and dying for.

Whew, by this point you're all probably thinking I'm some loser with nothing better to do with his time (And you'd probably be right...) But yeah, I so rarely find a show with a bittersweet ending, so they always tend to make me think when I see them. I guess in summary, Cowboy Bebop can considered a very detailed (and cool) character study in Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed, but not an extended metaphor for any specific philosophies. Thoughts regarding my "thesis", anyone?
