Exclamation points don't mean yelling or shouting. Yelling or shouting is determined by tone of voice.

Btw off topic... if no da is an exclaimatio point... but by any chance is yo a verbal question mark? i dunno, watching Evangelion today and hearing Asuka saying 'Nani yo' (what?) made me start wondering.

Hikou used to say no da? o_O that's the oddest thing I've ever heard. I'd say it's defaitnly a fan rumor too.

A Japanese guy I kno said something about "no da" just enphasising EVERYTHING and making it exclaimed in a way. So it would still be a VERY strong way of talking.

I'm no Japanese expert. But I THINK (remember the "think" here, I'm an idiot with these things) "Yo" is either polite OR it's something to do with being near the speaker.

Attack me with hatchets if i'm wrong.

*has a hatchet at the ready*
The No Da thing is a verbal exclamation point,
Yo is an opinion marker I think, (an opinion marker yo) can't be sure yet (will ask Yushin next week)
and 'Ka' is a question mark

(not trying to get off topic here)
I sometimes think "yo" seems to be more direct when talking to someone. But isn't used if, um, away from the other person. Like in a book.

Well, in a way, but the mask is actually to hide his scar on his left eye. (yeah some out there are yelling right now 'It's his right eye, dummy!' But in the manga, it's actually on the left.) The 'no da!' is just a silly little exclamation like thing which I will use to drive the world crazy!!!
Sorry. I really shouldn't say my plans out loud like that. :sweat2:

    Yup.

It's actually there for these reasons:

    1) to hide his scar
2)make people believe he's smiling all the time
3)with doing so with #2, he make the other people around him happy
4)to hide how he really feels... ahem

Also, btw, there's another anime character that uses 'no da' and 'na no da' (what's the difference!?) just as much as chichiri does. that'd be Purin/Pudding from Tokyo Mew Mew (soon to become hollywood Mew Mew *hisses*) a.k.a. Monkey girl uses it too. :p

She does?! Hmm, guess I never noticed because it's not in the manga. Oh yeah. I noticed that I got the side that Chichiri's scar is on wrong. I forgot that the manga is flipped.

P.s. - Love the siggy Fushigi Rockna! Seto rules! :anime:

Chichiri's "no da" reminded me of a Gravitation character who says "no da" as well (Ryuichi?), and guess what, they do have the same voice. If only I can read japanese well, I might discover that these two voices' were made by the same guy!

I think that Chichiri's "no da" is kinda his trademark. He always says it in the manga and in the english dubbed anime he always says "ya know". It is just a part of him. Like a quirk. He uses if for everything. It depends on the context and such. He has used it like "no da?" and "no da!" and just plain "no da". Chichiri isn't Chichiri without "no da".
