I was going to post this in the Debate forum, but I don't know how debateable Santa is. The topic is this; do you believe in Santa or not? Personally, I say yes.

Truthfully, I know it's the parents that put the gifts under the tree at night. I know this, although this hasen't been proven for some people becuase they've never actually seen their parents do it. I actually think the age you stop believeing in Santa is about 11 or 12.

    So, who believes in Santa?!

I believe in Old St. Nicholas, of course he's not alive in the physical sense anymore, but his spirit of giving lives on through the season of Christmas.

I don't think the so called "legend" is true, but the guy who plays Santa at the mall I work at looks so convincing you'd swear he's the real one.

It's impossible to find a picture of him online, of course, but I managed to dig this up:

He's in the first "LOOK" with the little kid. :p

    *randomly off-topic*
i don't know what it's like where other people live, but this will be the last year in australia where children can sit on santa's knee at the local mall. starting next year there'll be a little chair next to santa for the kids, and he'll only be allowed to touch them on the shoulder. this is all for fear of pedaphiles. (it raises the obvious question of why santa's aren't screened for this.)
but kids are probably gonna grow up thinking santa is dirty. (and what if a santa is arrested for 'inappropriate behaviour". it'd surely make headlines, and kids will see santa be arrested for being a dirty old man!)

*edit* to keep on topic, i believe in the legend of st nick, and blame 'santa clause' on coke.

Wait, are you talking about Santa or about Nike and thier stance on overseas clothing production "facilities"?

Regardless St. Nick may be dead, but his spirit lives on, and I guess that's what's important.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

If you're worried about Santa being a Pedi then why are you bringing your kid to see him in the first place?! We could prevent the problem by simply not taking our kids to see "Lumpy Santa" or we could make the places that hire him actually screen the individuals they're hiring.

No, let's just create more stupid rules and add to all the BS by giving kids a little chair. We'll keep the pedi's as Santa Claus because firing them might make a big "scene" and we can't have that. We, as parents, will sluff off our obligation to protect our children from those kinds of people right onto the shoulders of the malls and outlets where Santa visits because we don't have the decency or guts to tell our kids 'No, maybe seeing Santa in person this year is not such a good idea'.

TAKE A STAND AS A PARENT FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIVES!! QUIT PASSING ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RAISING YOUR CHILDREN ONTO OTHERS. If you don't want your kid to sit on Santa's lap because he may be a bad person then dont take him/her!! Don't pass the blame because you dont have the courage to stand up and say no to your own kids.

    Geeze, people these days.

WHAT?!! but...but...NO I WONT BELIEVE IT!!!

Yes because 'santa' is going to violate children infront of hundreds of people...and get away with it.

Anyway I believe that good ol' St. Nick did exist at one point in time but he probably used a sled pulled by one horse and gave small gifts to children in his small town and I dont think he ran around in red and white yealling HO HO HO! ...does anyone know where that came from anyway?

As for the coal thing, I heard that coal was brought to bad children from a different guy who dressed in black or something and who came after St. Nick had given out gifts and that he threatened to take away the really bad children...or something like that

    Amen

i heard wooden toys. who knows anymore.:D
i got a good laugh out of 'santachy' when i read it in the paper. it's the perfect excuse for stealing beer and p'ss'%^ from freeway overpasses. now when i do it i can call it 'protesting':)

coca cola. the idea of 'santa clause' was a creation of good ol' coke. the legend of st nick never really took off abroad until coke used him in an ad campaign. The concept took off from there. traditionally st nick was green. coke had to change that to their corporate colours for the ad, and they couldn't use the name st nick because of the christian religious references. (they were selling coke, not a religious celebration). this is what i've heard anyway...

I'm pretty sure it was gold. Yes actually, I'm 90% sure it was gold. He gave it to that family whose children were going to be sold into slavery. He dropped the bag of gold down the chimney and then, I guess, began a legend. Eventually he got into the whole "sneaking into people's houses and leaving them lil' gifts" thing that he started doing it for the entire town. Why he wore red, I have no idea.

He's not real no. But I bleieve in his presence or spirit if you know what I mean. I heard that st. nick was actually a crimnal at one point and that the tradition of giving gifts was started after his death, which was somewhere in the begining of december.

    He was a Communist.

Interesting stuff, anyway. The thing I always wondered about is why we leave the presents under the tree. I know we give gifts to supposedly celebrate the birth of Christ and reenact (in a sort), the gifts he was given by the three Wise Men, but I never understood why we left them under trees, and why under pine trees in particular.
