Ok, this is one debate I am serious about. I really believe kids should be able to drive that are under 16. I think if kids are able to pass the official DMV test to drive they should. I mean, they pass, they should drive. And if peple say, some kids can't be trusted on the road, then how would they pass the test to drive?

I was talking to my friend about this once and wanted to see other's opinion. And is a serious debate for me. I'm pretty sure most of y'all are over 16 and can drive, but I would like to hear other's opinions.

Hmm...No, I'm against it unless the test is seriously changed. Any schmuck can memorize that book and drive correctly for fifteen minutes to please the instructor (Apologies to people who had to take the test more than once, but I passed my first try), but it's the moments before an accident occurs that are the most important, and I think 16 is an appropriate age before we trust kids to have the right judgment.

Now, if the test was a much more extensive and difficult test (Like tracking a kid's driving through a week or something), I might be for it. But the way things are now, I think 16 is an appropriate age.

I think most people who are under 18 should not be allowed to drive, honestly. Yes, there ARE exceptions, but most children do NOT have the sense of responsibility that it takes to drive safely. It's just that simple. Kids like to show off, to play, and a car is just a big toy that their parents are paying for.

Then again, I don't think 50% of the people who have licenses who are driving should have them.

It all depends, honestly. Personally, I don't think anyone under the age of 16 should be driving becuase, when you think about it, we're still pretty young at 16. I'm 15 now!

Also, some kids at age 16 or older shouldn't drive at all. Like really idiotic teenagers. (And I mean stupid.) There is this boy, at my school, who is 17 years old, going into the 12th grade (and therefore should be graduating) and yet has failed 9th grade math THREE TIMES IN A ROW. He is nearly in all grade 9 courses, which is pretty damned sad. HE drives. I think, "If this is the kid who scores 14 percent (In all honesty, he did. I'm NOT lying.) and spends more time souping up his car instead of working for his diploma, this kid should NOT be driving. He's most likely a danger to other people on the road."

It turns out, he was. I was riding my bike, obeying the law, and wearing a helmet and he nearly hit me.

Here's my little statement to sum this all up...

At age 16, a new responsibily is bestowed on you...your driver's permit. Honour this new liscnce and don't be an idiot, thiniking you're god becuase you can drive... driving is not a right, it's a privilege. If you mess around with this privilege by spending your time souping up yer car, drag racing and being irresponsible on the road, TAKE THE LISCENCE AWAY, DAMMIT. However, if you're mature, take good car of your car and obey the law, well, you can drive for all I care.

Uea, you guys are right, but as Billy277 said, if the test was harder, maybe not as much lame a$$es will pass and only the people who really know how and are responsible will be able to drive. I say, if you can pass the test, go on ahead, but from what I have seen, my sis passing the test, that's not right, she's stupid, it must be easy then.

No, absolutely not. Young people don't seem to realise how serious driving is. Every time you start your car, you're putting yourself and everyone around you in danger. One slight mistake and somone could die. Young people just aren't mature enough.

My mom has been driving since she was 12, and has never been in an accident. I think kids should learn how to drive long before they take the test (with an adult of course), so they have much more experience. I dont see how a kid can just take the test after just a month or so of practice and expect them not to do something stupid. Though good driving does not require inteligence, it requires wisdom(experience).

personally, i'd be all for a more difficult test to take to be able to even get your licence that you have to retake every 10 years or so. kids aren't the only dangerous people driving; elderly people can be more dangerous than kids, and the kids will almost always get blamed for the accident. response time on the older pop.(ie 70) is reduced, therefore they may not respond to your brake lights as you slow for the light. that kinda thing. i think if the test were different, 16 is a good age to start trying. but as it stands, for your learners, i think it's fine, but 18 for your licence.

Yeah, I'm with the nay sayers. Personally I think 16 is too young anyway. 18 is about right for most.
Harder tests and manditory driving instruction(that'd piss a lot over people off though).
But what the hell do I care I can't drive. Never spent a minute behind the wheel.

Riiiiight. This comming from a 15 year old who knows how to drive

I am starting to drive and I am a responsible person. I have to pay 100$ to take a test, but frist my dad is giving me a buch of lessons while he drives. I read a book to take this test and I need to know the hole book. I have heard it is as boaring as hell, but ill read it, b/c I need the info and its important. I think it is fine to drive at 16, but there are some ppl I know that I would never let drive me around. I am 16 and ill be driving. I think it depends on the person, maybe they should look at their permanent record to see what type of person they are :sweat2:

I think 16 is ok, but under 16. I think not.

    A question I gotta ask.
Why the hell do you need to drive when you're 16? I'm 21 and I still don't need to drive.
Now there's nothing wrong with knowing how to drive. But owning a car?

o come on didn't you have days when you were sixteen that you didn't want to be driven around by your parents ? i thought every one felt like that atleast once in there life

well im a lil far off and won't be getting or trying for my licence soon but i think 16 is alright but there are some idiotic people out there who one day is gonna mess it up for every one and the law changes.

so i like the drive at 16 idea

sorry you might not have a need for a car but who knows what can happen 16 year olds have jobs, dates, times to hang out with there friends and have a little freedom without there parents

maybe i need to live a bit longer to truly understand what you mean but right now im a bit settled on my lil statment confused:

I'm actually scared to start driving. ._. scared out of my witts.

Actually, I think 16 is a reasonable age. What i'm against is how they're changing the age you can be to get a learner's permitt in Alberta (where I live). before it was 14, now they're gonna change it to 16 like the rest of Canada. i honestly don't like it, seriously, I need all the damn training I can get, cause like i said, i'm scared out of my wits to start dirving. What if I do soemthing wrong? What if someone crashes into me? It'd be nice if i had 2 years time to do little bits of practice under my parent's watch to kinda get the feel then maybe i won't be shaking like a bobblehead when it comes tiem to take the test.

Thank god, I 'm under the date deadline for the kids that can still take their learner's when they're 14. (i'm 14 in case ya didn't know) Yeah... I'll be tkaing my learners this year. ._. Joy...

i would like to point out, hamish, that not all of us have a means of public transportation we can use to get around. i own a car, and do a 15 minute drive to work almost everyday. same time back. i think there's a bus system here, i don't believe in it though, as i've never seen one nor a bus stop. and we're too small of an area to even think of having a cross town train or anything like that.

We talkinig about safety? Then, in general, kids under 26 shouldn't be able to drive.

But since the law actually allows ppl over 16 to drive, they might as well let 12 yr olds whose legs are long enough to reach the accelerator and brakes to drive.

Why not? i think 12 year olds should be able to learn how to drive. It should be that you get your permit at 12 then the lincense at 16, so then you have the years of experience to your advantage.

I still say that we eliminate every car known in existence. That would be the best way to solve all of this. Get rid of every car, bus, truck, motorcycle, train, moped, subway, so on and so forth.

Then have everyone ride bikes to where they want to go. If you're under 18, you have to ride a tricycle though. So then, people can point and laugh at you.

I think that not all 16 year olds will drive recklessly when they get their license *looks aruond innocently* i mean i wouldn't:rolleyes: but anyways. We shouldn't punish the whole age group form driving cause truth is its cooler cause parents won't have to waste their time driving teh kdis to and from school...and tehy can run errands and such...but i think we should get rid of all cars and blow up all the high ways and such a make a complex system of subways all aruond the USA...or maybe one of the those sky...trains....i wanna say monterails but i dunno lol. The ones high up in teh sky and out of the way. It seems awesome...liek slying...only on a track...or like riding a train only up in teh sky...lol^_^ sounds awesome to me!
