thankfully I am on the west coast....so I wasn't affected...but NYC was crazy today...I heard on the radio that about 80% of NYC was affected by the black out...but I'm not sure

    I was in NY. . .
at about 4:10 I was watching TV had a fan on and the computer. . .
    and then. . .
    everything shutts off. . .
I went to sleep thinking it was only in my house. . .
Someone stops by and knocks on the front door (doorbell didn't work). . .
I wake up and hear what happened. . .
It was so dark at night. . .
People were outside with candles and their car lights on. . .
The electricity just came back where I live around 8:20am.

    :)

lol I was gone the whole day, then I come back after 4, turn on my computer, then the power bar goes 'beep beep beep' I was like, huh? then net goes I'm like.. 'oh'. I think the hydro will be turned off again temporarily soon. but it was interesting to hear all these ideas as to why we had a blackout...

so sorry everyone for coming home yesterday. it seems hydro was waiting for me to turn on my computer. :glazed:

lol. we had batteries for radios.. so we knew what was going on. power came back around 4 am here. but I hear Ohio still doesnt have water? I don't get it.

It isn't just New York, several eastern states in the US and we here in Ontario were affected too, all the way up to Ottawa. The power outage is still going on though for some reason this section in my city has power, which will probably only last a few hours :dizzy2:

I hope that Ohio gets water soon.. what was with the New York mayor blaming Canada right when the whole thing started... reminds me of a South Park song.

I wasnt going to say anythign about the blaming Canada thing..
anyways so a Niagara power grid failed, and when that happens the protocol is to shut down the areas power plants. so I read 21 in Canada and U.S. were shut down. but I've heard so much stuff.. a plane crashing in N.Y., a fire in a N.Y power plant, Regis Philbin getting a new wardrobe, a chemical inbalance in Sarnia, lightining hitting Niagara Falls' power plant...the list goes on...

first thing I thought when the hydro went out is that NF blew up. well.. everyone would REALLY know if that happened.

    Twilight of the New Gods

If anyone has played .hack, I think they will agree that this situation is like the "Twilight of the New Gods" event from the game's backstory, but on a smaller scale. For the unitiated, this was a sudden power failure all over the world, with monitors flickering and giving people seizures.

I was at work yesterday when the lights went out. The power flickered for a second, then went back on. About a minute later, everything went black. Finding my way out of the factory in the dark was almost fun. They didn't know if the problem was just in the room we were in, or the whole plant, town, or whatever. After the real cause was determined, the machine operators started bringing all the product on the lines back into the freezers (which are powered by a generator). We were supposed to wait two hours, until 6:15 before leaving (that's company policy). This was quickly revised to 5:30. At 5:20, we were all sent home. When I finally got home, after something like a 40 minute walk, there wasn't a whole lot to do, so I just sat and read for a few hours. When it got too dark to read outside, I turned on a camping lantern. Finally, we got power back, so I went inside to make sure my computer still worked. To my relief, it did.
My sister said she heard on CBC that it was not a problem in the Canadian system.

I was in a subway car in Toronto for an hour before we were allowed to evacuate. It is not fun to be stuck in a small crowded area with no A.C. and a lot of people with bad B.O. It was hell.

intresting Fact: it goes active on aug. 16 right. Well Notredamas said the world was going to end an Aug 16 2003.

here in Ontario, nyo ^__^ so I turn my computer on this morning and people are telling me I'm using the power thats on for the hospital. I was so embarassed! and so ashamed that I went upstairs and guiltily watched several episodes of anime before shutting down for a while. lol.

I hope some people got to see Mars though.. I didnt see any stars where I was.. but maybe I didn't have my eyes open. and I hear now the mayor of Toronto is arguing with Mayor Bloomberg (sp?) on this whole 'blame Canada' thing.

Yeah, quite a major event. Blackout extending through all of southern Ontario, reaching into Ohio, Michigan, and New York.

New York was nuts, according to the news I read. 80 fires caused by candles as light alternatives. All those commuters and visitors who had to sleep in eerily dark subway terminals and on the streets, and even hotels that couldn't accept visitors because their electronic lock systems were down.

I was at work, which is why I'm here putting in more time on a project due Monday...but that night was certainly strange. Funny to watch so many people out and about outside when the electricity fails.

Dark_Dreams: The world ends today? Gosh darn it. :p

Too many theories for now. By the time its all over, it will be 2004 already. Your best bet is to live as best as you could and take it easy if you still gots no power.

Good advice that all those without power will likely see. ;)

In any case, terrorism was quickly crossed off the possibilities list. Last I heard, they were looking in the Ohio direction as the culprit.

I was at work when it happened, around 4:20pm here. And I was so close to finishing my shift --_--v I didn't think it effected such a big area until I listened to the radio at home. (I'm still wondering how the radio worked when the power was out...unless they have backup generators or something...) Anywhoo, got my power back the next day around 3am. I almost thought it was gonna out again today during the thunderstorm. Course I was at work again --_--vvv
