It's when the electricity is cut off to a house, or city, or many cities for that matter. It really sucks for some people because they could lose food in their fridge or freezers and even suffer from heat stroke if it's a really hot day because electricity is needed to run the air conditioner >_<

Does anyone know if the power has been restored everywhere yet?

That guy, so i have heard on the radio where i live (michigan) all the power has been restored everywhere. we didnt have power for 3 days. My house has power now tho! We lost every thing in our fridge. Spoiled milk, ugh.

We arent suposed to drink that city water for another day for it may be contaminated. But i have a subdivision well water system so i dont have to worry about that.

Zanza, it depends how bad the power outage. In this case several days with out power, a whole power system went out. Sometimes a power line might just be down so it may last a shorter amount of time. Hours or maybe a day.

You mean you've never had power failures in Bahrain before? I can't see that as a possibility...then again, I can...

Normally, blackouts (sometimes called brownouts) are fairly common events. A bolt of lightning hits a transformer, a car crashes into a power line, too much strain is put on power generators - any of those can cause areas to lose power until teams can get around to getting energy back online.

What was so major about this particular blackout was that is was far more widespread than any normal one. Usually, only a city block or comparable area is affected. This time, The entire lower half of Ontario as well as a large US area (stretching from New York to Ohio) was without power - 50 million people as I read in a paper this morning. No electricity. The two biggest cities in both Canada and the United States (Toronto and New York, respectively) spent a night in complete darkness will people falling back to candles and flashlights to see.

Hospitals and other emergency response teams were reduced to backup energy supplies, gas stations closed, water treatment plants were without power (Michigan residents were urged to move valuables out of their basements in case of flooding as well as to boil water before drinking). A bit chaotic.

And the biggest urk is that while everyone's pointing fingers (mainly the US at Canada and vice versa), we still don't have any answer as to why it happened. What caused such a widespread power grid failure?

I thought the world was gonna end. We have to drive away from our city because all the lights were out. And think of the people trapped in the subways... If you've ever been in a subway, you'll know what I mean. Scary place to be trapped in without lights.

I was at work again on Friday and I got sent home because of another brownout (a less severe blackout, in essence, and only temporary). On the one hand, I enjoyed two days of only working three-hour shifts, but I've lost a lot of money in wages as a result. And of course, the company's lost a lot of crops and frozen product ... financial pain. We seem to be fine now; let's just hope this doesn't happen again. All the stores in London were opperating on reduced power, with no A/C and only partial lighting. Debit was down at a lot of stores too.
I heard the cause is something in Ohio, by the way.

Well I lost my power for like 2days my town was like only giving certian ppl power and I was one of the ones who didnt get it at frist -.-;;. I have it now. My computer was trying to get fixed when the power went out, so it took longer to get it fixed. When it happend I was with Mog and my other friend and we were watching TV and then power went out. I put candles all over the house. We went to the radio and it said that power was out in Detroit, Ohio, NY, and some of Ontario (me). My dad was like oh it chould be tarorists. Then we hard it was the NF thing that overloaded. Then I heard that NY electric plant got hit by lightning :dizzy2:

We were on rotating shifts of power outages. So for a few hours, we would have power, but the other side of town wouldn't. Then, we'd switch. It was just lucky for me that I wasn't home during the "no power" hours.

If you ask me I think that Y2K made a wrong turn and ended up almost four years too late. :p Anyways... apparently it happened pretty close to where my brother lives in Jersey (that's just what I heard) and we lost power at work for a couple minutes.. as I don't really pay attention to my surroundings and such I didn't know what was going on for a while, hehe.

*snickers* I found it all pretty interesting. I kinda liked it *ducks* heheh. I was with Novus' little sister, watching t.v. an hour after I was supposed to go home. :S I was so freaked out when i heard the radio. At first her mom was mad cuz some store was gonna be closed in my town, but we forgot after we heard what happened. I was like this is scarey and I figured it was a part of the 'Prophecy' Don't ask me why. I just thought it was the devil's doing, I'm still wondering what was the reason it all blacked out. I had a nice night, I finally got to see the stars and everything and it wasnt too bright, so going to sleep was easy without the irritating park lights in my face. I went bike riding in the dark and took a big risk. I had fun though nearly running over ppl hehe. Umm I had like 5 candles lit in my room and it was really relaxing I loved it. I had trouble sleeping though..oh yeah the ride home really made me nervous tbh. With all the stop lights off...

You wouldn't like it if you were trapped in a crowded subway for an hour. Evacuating it was pretty cool though... but very dark and scary.

Now they've decided to sort of ration power to all the big consumers, like electronics stores and factories. As a result, we're only allowed to have half our plant running at any given time. Luckily for me, this means I only have to work from 7 to 12 tonight.
