    refinement:
they have a yearly contest to see who can make the most boring film, and still get an audience to clap at the end.

hypnosis is crap. if hypnotists could actually do what they claim, then they wouldn't be travelling around s^%&ty clubs doing the same show over and over to make a living. right? besides, cults don't use hypnosis. c'mon. they just prey on vulnerable people who for various reasons want to pass control of their lives over to someone else.
i think its egotistical for humans to believe that if there is a god, we were created in his image, and other earthly lifeforms are below us. I think its a similar thought that creates the idea that 'aliens' have a head, 2 arms, 2 legs and a torso.
it's not egotistical to believe we're alone. it's often rational thought that demands proof before it makes a wildly unsubstanciated claim.
we're social animals and i think most of us want to believe there's an afterlife, and other life in the universe as a result of this.

now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go kill some aliens on halo...

I wouldn't call it crap; I would call it "almost nothing like what the paranoid think it is". You still have free will during hypnosis, believe it or not, and if an order conflicts with your morals you reject it. Hypnotists don't claim mindcontrol as an ability; and for the record not every club is crap.

I've been hypnotized (both as part of a stage act and as part of a relaxation technique) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I never did something I didn't want to; I didn't have altered values (except for improved self confidence); at the end of the night I was not a slave to the hypnotist.

"Hypnosis, in itself, is just a state of mental and physical relaxation, along with a more focused sense of concentration. Hypnosis is not sleep (as is often popularly assumed), and most people find that they are more aware of smells, sounds, and feelings than usual. This concentrated awareness is what allows the hypnotherapist to plant positive suggestions and images in the mind of the client to bring about lasting changes."

First link is a school; last is a reproduction of an article from Scientific American. Even if the middle three don't jive with you, that last one alone should be enough.

hypnosis can make you see, hear or feel things. If cults can use it to convince you that certain Guru is God incarnate (or some messenger from K-Pax), they will.

Luvweaver, you are dramatically exaggerating the effects of hypnosis; whether you're doing this intentionally or not is not known to me.

Edit: From the article from SciAm

Again, hypnosis is not a subtle, subliminal thing. There's no super-secret encoding hidden under a layer of audio; hypnosis has to be very upfront.

Honestly? I think this thread is pretty bad overall. The second everyone started posting paranoia regarding ufos, the government, cults, and so forth, without any sort of actual facts from a reputable source to back it up, this thread became a metric ton of crap.
