The first time I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, it kinda made me go "Wah?" Not OMG THAT WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!!
But then when you watch it for that 27th time and you begin to understand it, you have to agree that its PRETTY FREAKIN AWESOME!!

Gungrave. The entire series made me go wow not just the end, the story is very original.

Impressive for a series based on a computer game.

I would say Witch Hunter Robin because was, really, the only anime that wasn't absurdly action-packed, or goofy and still held my attention and kept me watching. Some of my friends don't like it because it's not goofily hilarious or action-packed like Trigun or Cowboy Bebop.. but I think that's really what makes me like the series. It just drew me in without violence and action. Just nice, fluid animation and great characters, not to mention a story that just makes you go "Woah" at the end.

Scrapped Princess, Evangelion and Saber Marionette J are the only animes who have successfully accomplished that for me.

I can't really say that there were many that had me on the edge of my seat, but there were some anime show's that i felt like i would die if i missed it, cause i thought that it was a great show. Some of these would be:

Martian Successor Nadesico - i'm still a huge fan of this anime and it was the first one i loved.
Evangelion - This one held my interest right through up until the last 2 episode's, which i never had the chance to watch more then once or twice so i'm not fully sure on them.
Burn Up Excess - I thought that this was the funniest anime that i had seen in age's. I had to put my fist in my mouth to stop myself laughing so loud.
Read Or Die - This was one brilliant anime, and this is one of the few that will have you on the edge of your seat for sure.

    As for movies:
Spirites Away - Come on!! How can you not be empressed by this one!
Cowboy Bebop - So far i've only seen the movie and if thats anything like the series then i'd kill to get my hands on it, cause this was a damn good movie.

    Smj

    SMJ, Definitely.

I've read some critiques of the show, but it's because they haven't seen the entire series.

When i watched episode 25, i was completely shocked!
    This phrase says it all:
    "The Mesopotamia is crying..."

Yes. Those three girls are much more human than many of us. Sad, but true.

And JtoX was impressing, too! ^_^

Have to agree with Kain in that Read or die is a pretty good anime that has an impact, brilliant artwork and high quality production and a great storyline with funky characters, really made me get into anime. However, the anime that really blew me away, with storyline, characters and artwork was 3 x 3 eyes. Heavily underrated, this is one brilliant anime and a surefire classic for me, kept me gripped from start to finish :D.

The real key is not only telling a good story, but then wrapping it up so that the "wow" factor is not only there during the show, but at its conclusion. Those wonderful presentations are the ones that really grip me and have me saying, "Wow. That was great."

I've hit a number of series/movies that either start strong, or pick up that strength midway and towards the end. They take hold and grip me, prepping for a climax and resolution, but when it gets there it falls short of the setup. Which is a shame, because I looked so forward to seeing how things panned out, and when I got there felt let down. These kind of endings can turn my opinion in a great way. Something I've prepared to treasure and maybe even evangelize (no pun intended) instead gets tossed into my "subpar" rung.

Here are some of the titles I've enjoyed overall, but have lackluster endings:
    • Chobits
    • Hellsing
    • Noir
    • Samurai Deeper Kyo

But for those that do pull it off, it is simply amazing and truly leaves my in awe. I find emotion is usually the key. If the presentation actually brings me in well enough that I feel sad, happy, or even angry, it's a good sign of a fantastically done show.

So here are the titles that have impacted me with endings that made me pause at the end in reflection, or just say "wow":

    Angelic Layer
Never would've predicted that I'd have been so edge-of-my-seat from such a title, but it really was well done through and through

    Saber Marionette J
The ending is fairly good, but it's the second-last episode ending that really did the "wow" - not to mention several other key moments in the latter half

    Saber Marionette J to X
The final episode's Isshoni ending credits bring out the real impact of the ending

    Searching for the Full Moon
Can be slow, and filler at times, but anyone who sticks through with it to the end will experience a wide array of strong emotions.

    Strawberry Eggs
The ending just teeters on the edge of believability, but does the series justice.

Just for posterity, when I say "Saber Marionette J" without refering to a particular portion of the series, I typically mean Saber Marionette J, J Again, and J to X. I'm just bunching them under one title.

Thanks Jokinto. Seems a lot of people are into Hellsing, it's been quite well-recieved here in the UK as well, which is good!
