"True anime"? What the heck is that? ANYTHING animated is considered anime. Pokemon is anime. Just like Card Captors. I think what you're saying is that it sucks that everyone used to, or still does, think that anime like pokemon is ALL anime. Or anime that's for mature audiences is ALL anime. But, by no means should pokemon be destroyed, just as Magic Knight Rayearth (which *I* don't like) shouldn't be.

Oh, and Blue Crow, where do you live!? Well, you said, "as much as", so I'm pretty sure you've found it for cheaper. And I'm pretty sure that Mr. Pig has found it for some of the same prices. Like anything, just shop around, and you won't be *as* disappointed.

    *ahem*

Time for me to be a nitpicking meanie....

Anime is the japanese word for animation... not just stuff originating in Japan... Anything animated, from Wizards to Bambi to Bug's Life to Pokemon to Akira to Mysterious Cities of Gold... you get my point. Anyhow.. it's only over here that we've added the connotation of exclusively japanese to that.

oh, and Cliches bug me more than anything. 'cept when they make fun of them... thus... why I like Excel!

Well I understand that but remember, I still watch Pokemon, I know it's sad but thats beside the point. A lot of the people don't notice what it is because they don't know what it is so they just make stupid guesses

Im sure that 99.9% of the populus here is aware that anime translates to "animation". However, its logical that the term anime is only applied to Japanese Animations, and that is the case. so dont try and make people look stupid for no obvious reason.

Im not sure what the guy meant by "true anime", thats an incorrect term, but as i do, im sure you all know what he's getting at. Kenshin, Slayers, Love Hina, all the stuff that is available as a manga i think is his definition there.

And thanks Izzy :) ive seen a transformers 1st series dvd over here for 55 bucks equivalent (1 DVD!! :glazed: ), then accross the road it was 30 :-\

    stupid stores...

I also dislike when they cut out episodes of an anime when they are on TV.I understand why,but it's a real pain to buy a whole expensive a** DVD for just one episode.Like the hot springs episode of Outlaw Star. And the episode of Lupin the 3rd called
"To Be or Nazi Be"(he he).I understand that this is offensive to Jewish people, but that episode looked friggin' hilarious.I thought that they were gonna cut out the episode the other day about the terrorists and the middle east. They didn't though.

Some things to hate--Montreal has absolutely no Anime Conventions. Just once I want there to be an anicon here!

Also, little to no stores, with expensive, expensive prices, and so little selection!!

That's all I really hate about Otakudom.

Honestly, I think the worst thing about anime is, quite frequently, my fellow otaku. The fanatics out there give anime a bad name. That, and the elitist attitude a lot of anime fans seem to have, that bothers me as well. "I watch anime, therefore I am better than anyone who doesn't watch it."

*bzzzt* Wrong, <insert insult of choice>, it means you have an interest in animation from a foreign country. That does not make you any better or more interesting than someone who is into something else. When people hold that attitude about themselves and their interests, is it any wonder that other people look down on them?

</rant> Sorry if that seemed a bit vitriolic, too many people I know are like that, and it pisses me off.

Oh, and as always, the prices.. A single dvd costs less than $1 to press for a company, paying $25 for it seems just a little screwy.

One of the main reasons why non-anime fans show dismay towards anime is because most of the anime that are on normal TV are childish cartoon; Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Ranchers and Sakura! It's not that all the non-anime people are naive. It's just that the broadcasters don't want to risk importing many decent anime because it's in violation with "fundamental social teachings" of their country: kids should not be exposed to sex or violence.

Thats the bare-*** minimum for a Canadian. If that was in Canadian dollars. But it isnt.

But in Canadian, thats more than 50 bucks. FIFTY BUCKS.

And I've bought more expensive anime than that. yes, SINGLE dvds, not collections, not box sets, but a single movie (Akira was like 88 bucks Canadian...).

I can understand paying 200 bucks for the first Slayers series on DVD. Thats pretty good.

But some prices are just fut nucking ridiculous.

Excuse me for not seeing that as an logical extension... (for 'anime' to only refer to japanese animation) and it's not that it translates... it's a 'loanword' like we use several french, german, spanish, japanese & other languages words as part of our own language. Like 'paasokon'=personal computer, not just japanese made personal computers.
*learning japanese I think I'm learning japanese I really think so...*
Anyhow, I know what everyone's referring to when they say 'anime' and it's not what it actually means, that's something that bugs me, willful ignorance. To the discussion at hand I add the following, I don't watch anything being broadcast on tv in america today... why? that would be because when it comes to animation, the voice acting is bad, or the dubbing is bad as the case may be and most of them I just don't find entertaining. Then there's the status of other portions of TV... News... grandstanding doomsday... Sitcoms, bleh, no plot, not even entertaining in their episodic format and they run far too long... did ya'll know that Simpsons is just reaching it's 300th episode? I just found this out through a friend of mine... Simpsons outruns DBZ in length... What does all this mean? it means that even though I don't like pokemon, beyblade, yu gi oh, etc personally, I'm not going to bash them, other people like those shows. Forcefully cramming your ideals down other peoples throats isn't the way to convert them to your way of thinking. Introduce them to other things... take what they like, and *add* to it. For those who poopoo anime because of these shows, be tolerant, they don't know. I don't go cramming sauerkraut pizza down the throat of everyone who tells me it sucks without trying it. The proof of the pizza (or show) is in the eating (or watching).

I paid 60$ (granted, that was with tax) for the Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Special Edition DVD. Canadian dollar isn't worth enough for this Otaku. My parents said I was crazy to pay that much, but there you go.

The fact that it's in series, which means speading a lot. Plus it gets too addicting. That's about it...

Probably the #1 thing I dislike about Anime is that there are sooo many with half-assed story-lines and pointless/redundant situations (which most of the time are never fully explained). The art of animation is quite alive in these productions, but as for the art of writing/story-telling... I'm not so sure. I'd rather sit down and read a good book, than watch an anime with a bad story.

Case in point, I recently purchased the complete Hellsing saga, and I nearly yelled out in pain the 20th time there was a scene with Seras saying "Master" or "He's not human" for no good reason! In fact the entire character of Seras could have been deleted from the series with little to no impact on the story (and She's one of the MAIN characters). And how many different ways can we see Alucard get killed, only to come back? I mean I'd rather have a couple longer, more drawn out, and interesting battles. This quick kill crap just doesn't cut it with me.

Anyways I'd just really like to see the bar raised a little. We know the animation is good... all we need now are some more well thought out storys in order to push anime from good, to great. Blood is the perfect example of anime gone wrong. It was all about the animation. The story took second stage at every turn. Hell the back of the DVD notes a running time of 83 minutes... so when the credits started to roll after 40 minutes, and I was quite confused as to what exactly I had just watched, I waited eagerly for the second half to start... hoping for closure... only to be returned to the main menu. What might you ask was the other 43 minutes... "special features".

It's animes like that, that unfortunately turn people away from the genre. No one likes to be left guessing, or worse yet confused, after watching a movie. So in short, that's my #1 dislike. However there are enough well written animes out there to keep my interest, for now. But the list isn't exactly growing.

I'd have to say that the only things I hate about Anime's is that sometimes the main character (whether the main is a male or female) is just TOO perfect looking. Since when will the hero ALWAYS look like some sort of super model?
