Philosophy Where is the line between good and evil?

...What? I just said that every life has value, no matter how small. A tape worm may be small, and annoying, butit's life is still important. That doesn't mean I like them, though.

I wouldn't, of course. I'm saying, in the grand stream of things, that person's life is important. Yes, I'd hunt them down, and kill them very violently and messily, but just because I don't like something, or I think it has no value, doesn't mean it's not important.

 

Each thing/person has it's importance, not universal but relative. Each one of us gives the importance to them. For me, tape worms are not important, but it seems that Shinryu carese about 'em =P

Now, tapeworms killing your most loved one, that's a bit different I guess

 

*Anyone* doing *anything* bad to my most loved one would recieve a very bad end. Regardless of whether it were tapeworms, serial killers, or even you. That person would lose all their value in my eyes, and I would stop at nothing to give them the same.

But, again, in terms of existence, outside of anyone's eyes, that person is still important. Because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't single-mindedly hunt them down for all eternity until I had found them, rather, I'd be living a happy life at home with *her* He clearly would have had a huge impact on my life, and thus, is important.

-5:You are really evil, or like to do bad things...Only demented ones like you...

-4:You are very evil, and bad things amuse you.."almost" no-one sane likes you...

-3:You like to cause pain, or something like that...Some people may like you...

-2:You're just mean, or a bully..you like to cause pain, but not something crucial, you want to stay clean....other meanies like you, or people desperate for being cool will like you

-1:You're somewhat of a Jerk...You're beggining to like bad things very slowly, and you will soon find your path trapped, you're also considering yoursef on Santa's naughty list from this point on...

Neutral:

0:You're neither good or bad..You're confused about your ways..but you will soon learn the ways. Santa doesn't know where to put you on his list...

Light Side:

1:You're starting to be a good person...you're feeling good about yourself sometimes, and you will realize that the path you chose was a good choice. You can consider yourself on Santa's good boy/girl list from this point on....

2:You're slowly starting to help people more and more, and starting to make friends...some people notice you and may take a liking to you...

But it's not set like that. The scale doesn't work, because everyone views evil and good differently. As you can clearly see, not everyone agrees on what is "good" or what is "evil." What would be horrendous to me may not be as bad to you. Do you understand?

There's no possible 'line' of good and evil, because the very concepts of good and evil are deprived from people's opinions. There's no definite "good" and no definite "evil."

 

Ahhh...looks like we all DID learn something then....
Preety much the answer to the question is: there's different lines. The lines are never near each other. I think that's an answer that we all have to agree on here...truth is, there's so many lines, that there is no line. Because when we have soo many different beliefs, we often get lost and confused with what's right and what's wrong, because of all these lines. These lines sorta make a whole, therefore not being a line, since you can't really know where to start.....

Like I said, there is limits to good and evil, but I believe that your chart is wrong Seishin. Why? Because it sets a definite line of only good and only evil. Still, if we were all judged by who we were then, I dont think we'd understand who we are now. There is redemption, yes. But that still cant change the fact that you've done evil deeds to get where you are. So you never are really, just good or just evil.

I believe in universal moral standards.

What is right? What is wrong? Justice is in the hearts of people.

 

Yes, i do value the life of every thing on this earth, and i would value the killers life even after i seek my revenge. no one is truly good. no one is truly evil. moral standards, beliefs, how you were raised, what kind of life you had, all these things and more is what creates your line, which is why there are no 2 lines that are the same.

Even if it does not work, that scale is very good! The only thing that is missing is the question form to determine where you are

But, Shinryu's right again. I cannot even say that each one has his/her own line. You just know when certain actions are right or wrong. Nothing is written, nothing is absolute, and that's absolutely true!
