Speak of the guy, in the series it states Hanagata's from a "stuck up country", but doesn't ever name it...

I'm not sure I picked up where his father was from either, in J to X...

Right now my finger's pointed at Romana... but I've been wrong a lot of times before...

Anyone else take a stab, maybe throwing some more evidence into the mix...?

His father and his father's escort guys looked pretty japonese to me [IMG] Though he also looked nothing like hanako.. hmm. Romana seems as good as any, assuming it isn't Japoness

Hmmmmm.... yeah that part always struck me as kind of strange, seeing as Hanagata's name is as Japoness as anyone elses in that country. Oddly enough, I ran across a (fan made) translation of the first episode on a site a few days ago that was very different from the official one. Interestingly enough it did not include Otaru's accusation that Hanagata was from a stuck-up country.

But if I had to guess I'd go with you guys in saying Romana... or perhaps New Texas. Were he originally from Gartlant, it would have certainly come up as a major plot point, and there's small chance he could be from Xian. Peterburg is an interesting possibility too, but one would think he would have been more upset when his native land was invaided in SMJ. Thus, I'm sticking with Romana.

As for Hanagata being from anywhere besides Japoness, does anyone see hints in the series that this may be the case? I'll start this out; while Hanagata is certainly as colorful as the rest of Japoness' inhabitants (ie he wears bright and cheerful colors), his clothing is very different from anyone else's. Quite literally, no one else in Japoness has those lines. Romana's fashion aesthetic creeping in, perhaps?

I thought his clothes were that way because he's a flamer. Of course, as has been pointed out, this might not be too unusual. They sure are different. Could be Romanaesque

To me the biggest indication of foreigness (whatever) is his blond hair/blue eyes thing.

The most flaming character in anime, as he has been described to me ^_~.

The blond hair/blue eyes thing does stand out as well (and come to think of it we don't ever see another Japoness guy who looks quite like that, do we?)

    Then there's the car.

It seems few other Japoness citizens own one (I think we only see one other in all of J?) And if you look very carefully, the car's design looks a lot like those above-ground cable cars in ep. one of SMR (kind of golden, a little 1920s in design). Possibly something brought from Romana?

    Hmmmm, good question!
I'm going with Hanagata being of Japones nationality. My reason being that his last name "Mitsurugi" is Japonese for "Blazing Sword".

    -Some English Definitions:

Hanagata (floral pattern; flourish; ornament; star actor)

    Mitsurugi (????)

Ryyuu (styleof; method of; manner of ; )

-Back to the topic, the Motor-Palaquins are definately not seen too often in Japones... but that doesn't necessarily mean no one really owns them...

-His clothing definately is some sort of style reference to his country (he's supposed to be Upper Class) - if you look at the world leaders whenever they gather, one is styled like him...

-I'm thinking the Japonese-influenced name comes from the lack of "Roman Empire" names in the writer's repitoire

    BakaMattSu, still leaning towards Romana....

Hai, Matt! In the marionette cup episode, one of the judges looks a lot like Hanagata! He too has some kind of dandy-esque outfit going for him and is also blond. They don't say where he's from, though. But it's my opinion that since there's also a Frenchman on the pannel, that Romana is actually the nation on Terra Two that represents not Romania but Europe (otherwise where did the French guy come from?). And I don't think fru fru judge guy has quite the new texas look... hrmmm....

Lady Aoi: needs to go to Victorian Lit class now and is leaning heavily towards Romana (and thinks Hanagata would fit in well there)

Indeed he would. But not in Saber Marionette R...

I'll have to take another look at that judge. Good points all, you are true SM Scholars

Found a new Saber Marionette site this weekend *which surprised me because I thought I'd visited nearly all of them my crappy computer could open o_O).I'll dig up the URL when I can and post it here. From what I could gather on the site (and keep in mind this was the English version of the Polish site so the English at times was less than clear, as I'm guessing it was not the webmaster/mistress's first language) Hanagata Kamatarou is actually Mitsurugi's foster father (which would explain why they look nothing like one another). I'm guessing they mention this somewhere in Episode 3 of SMJ2X when Hana's dad shows up to drag his wayward son home.

It seems the Romana argument may have more weight than we thought...ne?

Actually, being lucky enough to have the first 10 J to X eps of fansub, I can confirm that episode 3 is entirely about Hanagata and his father...

It really doesn't lend anything to the country in question (He looks Japonese...)

BakaMattSu, "Japonese cause he's looks like he's from Japones, not Japan..."

    Summaries, huh...

If it's any consolation, I've got 11-20 in raw japanese...

No point in watching 'em 'til I can understand 'em...

And for summaries, I don't wanna blow any story 'til I watch!!!

BakaMattSu, oooh...even if they did release the DVDs this afternoon, I still couldn't watch 'em...
