If you let spoilers affect your attidute in seeing an anime or not. Then you are not a real anime fan at all, and Evangelion has been out forever their is like 3 different dubs of it. Most of you people probly rely on fan subs if you just use ebay you can get a english sub version of any anime in DVD format will as long as it is complete.
You wont beable to find Wolf's Cry yet why cuase it is not even complete. And just a tip to who ever is going to start using ebay for the first time. Don't ever buy VCD's they are not even the orgianal they are burns, unless stated other wise. There is also alot of good VCD retailers outher their.

Heaven forbid that someone would want something intended to surprise and shock to surprise and shock them. Suck it up. Some people hate spoilers.

Doesn't mean everyones going to have seen it. As for the 3 different dubs, those are english, french, and spanish.

So, do you have demographics to back this up, or did you just pull it out your arse?

Ebay can be hideously overpriced, especially if its overseas. One time my purchase of a cd, which I won with a bid of 12 bucks, cost over 70 due to shipping, currency handling and such.

Thanks for the tip. Now, if only I had even heard of this series (or cared aboiut it) to begin with...

None of the proceeds of E-Bay go to the people who actually made the anime to begin with. Whether real or burned, the creators aren't making cash. The only way for them to profit from it is to buy the stuff from a store of some sort.

Now that I've completely ripped this post apart...

Also, buying HK and imported subs actually DETRACT from the official releases, which are stemming all the new-age anime fans out there. It's boo. Disgusting. I'd rather pay a little more so ADV, Bandai, Productino I.G., etc. have the cash to buy MORE rights and sub them RIGHT.

And fansubs...yeah, I rely a LOT of fansubs. That doesn't mean that I don't buy anime. I've over 600 bucks in anime DVDs right now. I'd spend MORE, but some people need money for school, gas, small expenses, gifts, etc. Fansubs allow me to view anime that I'll most likely buy. In fact, almost ALL my anime I've previewed before buying, because of fansubs. The only notable exception is Kare Kano...which rocked anyway.

And I *hate* knowing spoilers. They piss me off. And I'm not an anime fan? Get real.

Yeah. I've got a lot of fansubs. And, if I had the cash, I'd buy the DVDs (especially the Vandread DVDs). However, its just too expensive. 50 bucks -before- tax for one DVD which only has 3 episodes?

I have school, supplies, food and rent to worry about.

And I've got a very large amount of legitimate anime. Hundreds of dollars worth.

However, that was all bought back in high school, when I could afford to spend money on things like that. Now that Im in college, its a different story.

LoL how funny, When some one wacthes or burns a fansub it doesn;t help out the creators either. First of all I wasn't intending the original to help out the creator or any of the proceeds going there. If you are a collector you dont want some burned cd that you payed over 30 dollars for. How funny that you think anime is over priced on Ebay. I'll post some link to the auntion's that i have won. They seem quite cheap to me for getting the whole seires for under 40 bucks.

No. I got ripped on a musical cd from Singapore. The auction was cheap. Sadly the money order was not.

    Now. Lets see.

Spindle of 50 blank cds: 40 dollars after tax.

Now, lets assume that these are large files and you can only fit 3 episodes on each cd.

    Thats 150 episodes.

Now, assuming each series is 26 episodes (and they arent), thats nearly 6 full series for only 40 bucks.

Hey! Looks like my value beats out yours! :)

And yes, you are a newbie. You registered just a little while ago.

Edit: Just took a look at some of those auctions. All region? Hmm. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the legit DVDs arent all region.

Actually, Griffeth, I just admitted to the fact that I BUY anime AFTER I watch the fansub. As in, AFTER. And you know, those 40 dollar HK DVDs? Well, do you *know* how horrible they can be? Besides, I buy anime just as much, if not more than you. You *may* have more as of this moment, but I do buy, and buy often. And, I do help out the anime community by buying from the official distributors.

I *never* buy from HK or import because I don't trust them, and I'd rather see all the companies that buy the rights to do it. Buying fansubs are a good way to preview anime you *want* to buy, like I already said. There's no effin' point if I buy something like Magic Knight's Rayearth and hate it (because I do) and be disappointed that I bought 140 dollars of the REAL (not imported) DVDs. Why? It's called smart buying. Oh, and to follow up on Neph's region statement, only Region 1 (I don't know if PAL uses another region, but I'm sure they do) DVDs are legit for the US and places that uses NTFS DVDs.

Again, those 40 dollar DVDs dont' help distributors worth crap. It's pretty much the same as buying fansubs. In fact, it is. Why? Because, well, let's see. It's not made by the legit companies. You pay less, but you get ripped off because you pay those 40 dollars instead of getting a fansub.

Do you *get* any legit anime? If you don't, then good for you. I'll stick with my fansubs and buy smartly (even if a bit more expensive) while you can go buy your imports and for all you know, they'll screw up the translation bad enough. Or are you just mad that some people here have the *capability* of getting fansubs? You don't have to feel too bad dude, it just sucks for you, is all.

Errmm, that's EXACTLY what you're doing by buying HK subs.

I believe that the fact that you spelt dumb wrong definitely proves my point.

    hahaha

Some of you people make me lmao, have any of you seen the qualitly of most of these imports? . Another thing you are calling a person a newbie on a animefan site, you either like anime or not, and I would never be caught dead calling a new fan of anime a newbie. I would hate to feel that I was the one who was repsonible for someone to quit likeing anime due to fans being rude.
It was also very amusing to see that since I have registered like yesterday i take it. That people on this bored who think that they are gurus. The post about me getting crappy HK garbage, atleast the package isn't some burned cd, and most of the anime is dubbed in engish, The english voices of Trigun and Outlaw Star are the same as the US releases.
People who complain about never being able to get anime or it is over priced. You are right if you hang around stores and wait it is over priced and they don't have a very wide selection at SunCoast yet. That is why I use ebay you #1 web merchant. and Izzy you have proved my point. Even though you have seen the same fansub you still bought it. But wouldn't one say that the Fan Sub may be a little.. um whats the word i am looking for? spoiler!!...
Also when Nephilim_X replyed that he was buying stuff CDR and stuff and that he could put 3 eps. I already said that I dont want to displaying CDR"s if i wanted that them i would just get all my anime from IRC or Kazaa. I do btw wacth some fansubs before i get the title. Like I have just seen one episode of chobits and I will be buying that as soon as they have a bi-lingle import. I would rather pay 40 then 150 when you can get the same thing.

    Re: hahaha

This only shows how much of a newbie you are, you stupid git. n00b is a reference to forums.

I am a guru on this board. Now, as for HK... the lone HK I do have, the Eva movies, ARE crap. The visual is ok, the audio is ok, but not only are the subtitles total crap, but at some points they dont even entirely fit on screen. Now, as for packaging being cds. 50 cds in a cd wallet or even on a spindle is way more space efficient than 50 dvds in their cases. But I'd never put DVDs in a wallet. Why? CD/DVD wallets occaisionally damage what they hold. CDs are cheap and easy to replace. DVDs are not.

As for voices, I could care less about whether or not its dubbed, since I usually watch subbed.

A fan sub is NOT a spoiler because you're actually watching the bloody series! Plus with Ebay, theres always the risk of them just not even sending it. Ebay is ok, but its nowhere near as good as you make it sound.

A cookie to anyone who knows what he meant.

Will he ever give an actual reason as to why he won't use a CD-R? Probably not.

Furthermore, if watching stuff on the computer isnt your taste, its pretty easy to make VCDs these days. As for DVD Burning, no idea, havent done it yet.

    Chobits: 8 cds.
8 blank cds: 6.40. After tax.
    Quality: DVD quality. :)

BTW people, Hong Kong bilingual DVDs are the 'worst' in terms of 'morality' in this issue. Why? Because not only are the original staff not getting paid, but neither are the translators or english voice actors.

    Re: hahaha

That makes me laugh. I admit that I watch the damn fansubs (the WHOLE series) before buying the anime (the WHOLE series, if applicable) and you think I proved your point. I say I preview it before buying it. I think that means I *know* what happens, dipstick. Let me just draw out my little table for you, so you know what I do when I buy anime.

    ->Internet
    ->Fansubs
    -> Izzy
    ->Izzy Loves -> Izzy Buys
-> Izzy Likes -> Izzy keeps fansubs
    ->Izzy Dislikes -> Izzy doesn't Buy

Simple right? It's just so blatantly EASY! Look! Look! Mite! Mite! Sugoi, na? Utskushi daro? Totemo ii wa?

See, that there's the funniest load of horse-tail that I've heard. Why? Because that's exactly the same process I just mentioned! WOW!!! So you buy those HK Bi-lingual DVDs, big whoop. Like I said, I'd rather support the companies helping bring all this anime here than get horrendously subbed or pirated HK imported ones. I love capitalism and all, but we have piracy laws for a reason.

It's really up to you if you buy those HK DVDs or not, but if you're badmouthing ME for doing the exact same thing as YOU...then come off your high horse, put up your dukes, and let me bash your face in with my manly *****tits. Amen to that. Word to your mother.

LoL I meant as in fan subs may spoil US release sales.
Why do I think? This lets see, If you already seen it then wouldn't one want to spend their money on some thing else like a series that they haven’t seen. And some thing else Nephilim_X I am sorry to hear that you have had a bad exp with the HK stuff, I have the same Evangelion set and they also do suck very bad, The first episode has like 3 parts were it glitches over and loses a minute. Also if I am not mistaking you have the TV + Movie 4 disk? Same as I do. That was indeed a bad investment at over 40 dollars when you add shipping.
I honestly thought that when you were using the word newbie you were applying it to my knowledge on anime. I don't see how there can be anything on this bored that would be difficult as to have a rep system such as the words Newbie and Pro, or Guru. Isn't this here to just discuss anime and manga?
Also Izzy I am sorry that you feel that I have offended you. I don't see how that I offended you, I in no way meant to offend you. I was only defending myself against, how people on this bored treat the newbie I am sorry that you got mixed up in this. As a warrior at heart thought I will have to embrace you fighting words, so if it is a duel that you want name you rp room and well go at it. It has been a while since I have done any text fighting. I have been playing a mmorpg for the past few years called Ultima Online.
I wouldn’t mind getting back into the old text days though.

Welcome to the boards, Griffeth. Might I suggest not pissing off the long-time members? It doesn't do much for your image. When they called you a newbie, they were referring to the length of time you've been registered on this particular board. It really is rather simple, if you stop to think about it logically.

Now, to the topic of DVDs purchased off ebay....

Ebay is not the best place to be buying anime DVDs. While you can occasionally get good deals, very rarely are you assured a quality product. Why is this, do you ask? It's because 90% of the anime DVDs available on ebay are going to be HK bootlegs. A bootleg, by definition, is not legal. Yes, there are some legitimate, American releases being sold on ebay. You can find them. The thing is, most of the time it's cheaper to buy these DVDs from other stores. DVD Price Search provides an easy way to find the best deals on legitimate American releases.

There are several big tipoffs as to whether or not a DVD is legit. First, check the region encoding. Region free DVDs are automatically suspicious. Second, are Chinese subtitles an option for the DVD? If they are, you've got your hands on a nice, shiny bootleg. Third, what is the episode count like? If it's rather high (seven or more episodes per disc) you most likely have a bootleg, and the quality of the series may be compromised.

If you buy DVDs from HK you are most likely depriving the original artists of their fair share of the profits. While this may not exactly hurt them, it isn't good for continued business. I think I speak for all of us when I say we want the Japanese companies to continue to produce anime, and we want the American companies to continue to translate and distribute it for our enjoyment.

Finally, fansubs are not spoilers. The definition of a spoiler is as follows: "Being told about a major plot point that is supposed to be a surprise before seeing (or reading) the story in question." This definition says nothing about the medium in which you finally view the series. Why? Because it doesn't matter. You could see the series fansubbed, commercially subbed (or dubbed), or raw on Japanese TV. Any one of these methods would give you exposure to the series, and being told about something you've already seen does not make that information a spoiler.

As far as fansubs hurting American sales....it's actually been proven otherwise. Take the series Fushigi Yuugi. When it was released the fansubs had been around for at least a year. People knew about the series, and there was already an American fanbase. These American fans went out and bought the commercial release because it was of better quality. Then you have the series Ayashi no Ceres, which was created by the same person. It was licensed right away and there were practially no fansubs created. It didn't have a strong fanbase when it was finally released and the sales weren't as good. Another thing to note: American distributors pay attention to the fansubs. They're more likely to license a series that is very popular in fansub format because that means there's already a fanbase.

I like downloading fansubs for several reasons. One, it gives me a chance to preview a series before I go out and buy it. Two, they give me access to a much larger amount of anime, particularly things in current Japanese release. Three, they're convenient.

No, I just have the movies. Although I did like how they had the movie trailers at the start. For some reason setup that just made me happy.

As for purchasing anime, I -do- do it if I like it. I'm going to buy Vandread as soon as I can, however cash flow is very tight. Hence, no anime.

Plus, where I am right now doesnt have a very good ordering system. Im going to order stuff when Im back home and can get it at a place with fair prices and support a local business.

Ahh most of my anime is not HK to, I could survive with out HK thought but then think of all the waiting and I do admit this one thing about fansubs. The Hellsing fansubs are very well done. I like how they gave little tips. When I do wacth HK fansubs it does give you this kinda lonely feeling.
I will be going to college as soon as i can buy off some of the dept that I have acomated. When my father left us he left my mother so much dept and when I turned 18 she has me sign a paper that made all the dept mine. So until it is all paid off I am unable to get a education loan at the moment, it isnt that I have alot of money that i have anime. It is just that is all that I buy, with my play money. ((That is what I call the cash that doesn;t go to bills.))
What I mean buy all my money goes to anime is that if you came to my house like a mounth before I went shopping, for new clothes you would have seen that most of my clothes I have had since i was 17-18 in highschool. MY aunt took me shopping with her own money it was a working so hard gift. So now i have alot of new clothes, but i wont be buying 2 new anime's this mount becuase I took my aunt and uncle to redlobster to tell them thanks. Spent over 42 bucks on us all. I am glad that my uncle stone got the tip.

Wow, I never thought I'd see someone go off on a semi-unrelated tangent in their own thread....

Griffeth, Griffeth, Griffeth. Have you even bothered to read people's posts since you strayed off on online rpgs? Shadowbard put up a nicely detailed post about HK bootlegs and eBay. Here, let me reiterate some points for you that you may not have noticed in that post, as well as pointing out a few things of my own.

Shadowbard gave good tip-offs for recognizing bootlegs, if you care to go back and read that post.

Yes, it's possible to find legit dvds on eBay if you look carefully enough. But they won't be these wonderful $40-for-the-whole-series sets you're lauding. They'll be the same 3-6 episode-per-disc dvds the rest of us are purchasing legally. And while our own money that we may possibly spend on ebay on the few legit dvds for sale there might not be going directly to the companies that released them, the money the seller spent on those same dvds will have, and thus the anime companies are still being supported. However, the money you are spending on all those HK bootlegs aren't getting anywhere near Japan. Yeah, maybe one or two people who sell HK bootlegs made their copies by ripping legally-bought dvds, but then they're selling multiple copies and the legal companies aren't getting a single cent of that money. Others are simply taking fansubs and burning dvds with them.

You say you won't spend your money on burned discs for your anime. Well, then don't leave it at just avoiding VCDs on eBay. You should avoid all bootlegs, since those that aren't made by "professional" (I use the term loosely) bootleg companies in HK are made with a bunch of blank discs and a dvd-burner. Believe me, it's possible. I know friends who can copy dvds with their computers.

Also, the quality you glorify isn't always that great. For example, a friend of a friend got the HK boolegged Saiyuki dvds, because she couldn't wait for ADV to finish releasing it before seeing the rest of the series. She will buy the ADV set once it's available, however. As for the quality...the video quality and sound quality is that of some of the better (but not perfect) fansubs, and the subtitling...let's just say it's fitting material for Engrish.com. "What are you doing on earth?" comes to mind.... (when trying to say "What on earth are you doing?") Another friend bought the Slayers Next box set on eBay, thinking it was the legit set, and got another set of not-so-good fansub-quality videos. Why risk your luck with the possibility of poor quality videos when you can purchase great quality videos and dvds from the legit companies. At least then, when the quality sucks, you can demand a refund and actually get it.

As for such things as the Trigun set you say even has the same dub actors as the American release.... That's because some HK jerk ripped the American release dvds/videos for their HK set (and some Americans do this too). Guess what? As has been said, not only are the anime companies not getting their rightful money from this, neither are the actors!

With the whole thing you have on "why not spend money on something you haven't seen?" I guess you just throw away your HK dvds then, when you're done watching the whole series. I mean, you've seen it all, so why keep it? Oh, yeah! Because you like it and want to rewatch it. That is why so many anime fans who watch a whole series in fansub form later go out and purchase it in legal release. The only thing keeping me from doing that with Inuyasha is because Viz is stupid and is only putting three episodes per disc for a 100+ episode series. I'm waiting for the boxsets.

And take it from a fellow eBayer. EBay isn't the nice, wonderful shopping market you make it out to be. If it was, there wouldn't be sites like www.ebayersthatsuck.com and personal webpages relating bad experiences with eBay purchases. Welcome to the real world.

For those who care, if you would like to look for Anime dvds/videos, and actually want to support the companies that produce and legally release these series, here is a list of places you can check out.

    www.amazon.com
    www.barnesandnoble.com
www.animaxis.com (official Japanese release, subtitles not always present)
    www.animegamers.com
    www.animecornerstore.com
    www.animenation.com
    www.planetanime.com
    MediaPlay
    Suncoast
    FYE
Wal-Mart (not a wide selection, but it's got some. It had the Escaflowne Movie for a while)
    Best Buy
    local media stores

As a note, I'm not trying to be insulting or angry-sounding or anything. Just matter-of-fact (and maybe a bit sarcastic or cynical). Just so I don't offend anyone.

I have read your post, I'll tell you something also the first time that i have ever heard of HK bootlegs was today in this thread. I thought that when I was buying from the Ebay sales that I was getting the exact same orignal that they are selling in Japan.
When I look at the wrapping and stuff and the disk they look very legit but as you have just posted about people being able to make it look like a pro job. This is the logic that I have been using I wanted to get the same product directly from the original, Ever since buying some american anime and then hearing that a few mounth later they left out stuff due to chirldren being affected I have not been very keen on wanting to support american distibutors who want to profit on the high cost sales to us americans who want quality orignal anime. What really kicks me off is that after I found out the american company that released the title and left stuff out was going to charge even more for a Director's cut. if you dont know what title i am refeering to KITE
I do own both of those the first edited version, and that director's cut that cost even more. I am also not very set on the american DBZ stuff I refuse to buy the DVD's due to them leaving out stuff. That funimation company I will not support them at all. I want it as the japanese kids wacth it every day on their television.
But I dont like the idea of buy some guy sitting in hong kong my hard earned money for something that he didn't even creat Cuase the money needs to go back to the company that made the anime so that they have money to make more. Don't you agree?
I also know that a percent of the proceeding from american anime distributors go back into the company that orignaly created the anime.

Dude, it's not that you "unwittingly" put me in this little spat with you. You did it from the start. Unfortunately, I was also immature and added to the problem. However, I'm just pointing out the explicit fact that you do the same thing as I do. Which is watching the fansubs before buying the actual anime. You admitted to that, and that's what I was referring to.

I already said that I don't care at all whether you buy HK or not. But, I'd *prefer* people to buy legit DVDs if only to get the companies more money to get MORE anime series. But if you're happy with HK, then by all means, go for it. I won't hold it against you. What I *will* hold is hypocrisy. You stated that watching fansubs is a rip, when you do it yourself. It's not a spoiler and it's not a bad way of saving cash. I just want to see an admission that you do the exact same and that I was right.

Other than that, I have no real discrepancies with you. I'm sorry for your financial situation, but that doesn't help the fact that you said something and do something else. Sorry, but true.

I'll now detract from this little argument, happy with my own results.

I am not againsnt spoilers, I dont think that fansubs are bad, I never said that what me and you both do is not cool. I own some anime that i very much wish the i never owned, it was a waste of 29$ to buy Amon Saga. I knew nothing about the anime it was just that the Wrapper looked apealing and I couldn't find what I was looking for so i just grabbed it and bought it.
If i would have wacthed it fansubbed or put some time into it I would not bought it. I am pro for fansubs it saves me the trouble of having to buy a HK to see if it is bad or not. I think that most of the anime;s that are being fan-subbed are very good titles though. Like Wolf's Cry as soon as it is released I;ll buy that in a heart beat.
