This is what I am talking about where is it that i am critizing people who view the whole series of fansubs.

I am talking theoretically, that if you have seen the full series that you may want to spend your money on a series that you haven't.
I am still waiting to hear a quote for when I critizing people for wacthing Fansubs.

This god forsaken thread is still going on?!

Ok. Look. There is no direct quote. Rather it is the amount of time you kept trying to say VCDs and Hong Kong DVDs were superior to fansubs. Its like there was an extreme dislike for fansubs which was implied but not directly stated.

Although why someone would watch a fansub then pay for ANOTHER, more expensive, and usually poorly translated bootleg is beyond me.

How's that? Your posts in general criticize fansubs and people buying $70 legal copies instead of your $40 bootlegs. Before, with that other quote I posted, you were commenting on my post about why we bother to buy series we've already seen in fansub format. And I tell you right now, wading back through your spelling and grammar gives me a headache trying to find quotes that make sense.

Now, as for me, currently I rely on fansubs and what little legal copies of anime my friends and I have, as we're all very broke college students. Yeah, I own the first dvd of Inuyasha, but it was a Christmas present. And before you ask, it's the legal dvd released by Viz, with only 3 episodes on it, not the very much illegal HK bootleg version on eBay. Fansubs are currently the only way, more or less, that I can still watch anime and talk about it with other people. They are my fuel until I have the means to purchase the American-release dvds.

And why do I go for the legal releases? Because boolegs are basically fansubs on dvd, when they aren't complete and total rips off of American releases. Why should I pay $30-40 for a dvd of fansubs when I can just download them myself and wait for a more decent copy in America?

And to quote myself....(or at least paraphrase.....)

Fansubs actually have a history of helping anime sales in America, not hurting them. The reason behind this? Fansubs make people aware of the different series coming from Japan, and with this awareness comes a fanbase. This means that there are going to be people interested in the series before it is released in America (or other countries).

Here's a real-life example using the series Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres. Now, both of these series are by the same person. Both of them have excellent stories. Fushigi Yuugi has done better sale-wise than Ayashi no Ceres in America. The reason behind this is due to fansubs. There were fansubs of Fushigi Yuugi available at least a year before it was released state-side. Because of this there was a fanbase, and people were interested in getting better quality versions of the series they loved. When Ayashi no Ceres came out in Japan, American companies snapped it up. Very few fansubs were created, word of the series didn't spread as far, and the sales weren't as great.

Next point: American companies pay attention to the fansubs. Fansubs are a pretty good gauge as to what is and isn't popular among the American anime fans. This allows the American companies to license and release the series that people are the most interested in.

Finally, while there are people who won't buy the official release because they have the fansubbed version, there are just as many, if not more, people who have seen the series fansubbed, fallen in love with it, and go out and buy the DVDs when they are released because the DVDs have better quality. Fansubs are nice, but the quality is questionable.

Also, how many people do you know with enough disposable income that they can just walk into a media store and grab something random off the shelf just because it looks cool/interesting? I don't know anybody like that. I do know plenty of people who will buy what they've seen or what they've been recommended by trusted friends.

Interesting note: All the anime I own I either saw fansubbed first, or borrowed from a friend. I have yet to buy a series just because I think "hey, that looks cool."

    Re: Re: Omg

Kogarashi pretty much sums up my point right there. Fansubs provide us with a cheap, easy way to see if we like an anime (and reviews dont always work that well). If we like it, then we'll buy it. For those of us with tight incomes, this is a lot better than pissing away 50 bucks to watch 3 episodes.

LoL neph I agree this thread is dead all i heard was a bunch of the same stuff bening said over and over again. And Shadowbard
you are so far the most sane person that i have seen on this forum, keep it cool. Kogarashi I don;t really have any idea of what kinda impact that you are trying to make. Most of what you say is what Neph or ShadowBard has said.
But thanks for sticking in the thread for so long, it has been nice having you all here. This has been a very great and exciting first 2 days here. I look forward to more memoralbe moments. But with lets say less flogging.

We keep repeating ourselves because you don't seem to listen sometimes, Griffeth. Though, I will say to your credit that you're not one of the worst I've had this discussion with.

As for the impact I was trying to make...I'm trying to explain to you why I like to buy legal, why I download fansubs, and why it certainly seemed to me that you were criticizing anime fans for downloading fansubs.

Well that seems reasonable Kogarashi, I wasn't trying to criticize others for watching fan subs. I was just trying to say that a fan shouldn't allow spoilers to affect them watching anime or not. What you said about not throwing away some thing after you seen it is very much how I feel with my love for all anime. When I had to wait for the DBZ series to air on carton network the Freeza saga, instead of waiting I went to fan site and read about it.
It was a detailed summery of what will be happening in each episode. Can't get much spoiler than that can you, and I keep reading and read tell I finished reading the summaries for the whole entire DBZ episodes. Next I traded fan subs and anime tell I had every episode, then when I had it all and still do to this day on VHS copied.
I watched one tape on Evangelion and then I started reading on it and grew very fond of Auska so I did the same thing for that as I did to the DBZ.
I know that not everyone shares the same emotions that I do towards anime but I would think that if you were coming to this forum and posting for a while like I see most of the posters in this thread have over 100 post, some even 1000.
When I was called a Newbie by Neph, I thought that he was talking about my knowledge of anime. I have never seen or heard the term “Newbie” applied to a forum. I play an online multi player role playing game myself, called Ultima Online. I have been playing it for a few years now, when we use that term “newbie: it is a “put down” most of the time.
So I automatically thought that I was going to have to defend my anime knowledge, so I did what we the players of Ultima Online do. When we hear of Vet players who start harassing the newer players, we advise against it due the chance of losing a player that would be able to contribute into this new and vast virtual world. I would just as much but even more hate to lose a new fan of anime, because I would love to see that person contribute and reap the benefits of this very entertaining and almost a new different of life hobby.
    We know now that it wasn’t the reason that any one brought up the term newbie, it was just a way to refer to the new people here. See it is what I call almost an ethnic difference, here you people are openly using newbie as a good term and people have learned that it is not a way of putting down any one for their lack of what they don’t know. I have learned and been taught that the word “Newbie” was some thing that was used to put down some one. Now that we have heard the way that Vets greet the new posters on this forum. I think that I wouldd like to show an example how us vets greet the new players in Ultima Online;
Hello, nice meeting you and Welcome to the world of Ultima Online.

How pleasant, sweet and civil that is!

If only I was as well.;)

I don't care if a newbie doesn't like being called newbie. Anyone with skin that thin needs to learn to suck it up before posting with me.

I guess this is more of a problem for the mods here, I can tell you what I would never let one person try to affect the UO player base.

I've been far more cruel in other threads.

    I am still here.

The mods have most definitely seen me in action.

    That says something.

    Have a nice day. :)

Yes, welcome to the world of MangaToAnime. Region 2 DVDs (from Japan) are well mastered and well worth their great expense (though understanding them is difficult). I watch fansubs sometimes but try to make them keep a backseat to my DVD purchases; any fansubs I keep always lead to me purchasing the legal US releases on DVD. Spoilers are annoying; I got hold of one before seeing End of Evangelion (in my first month of anime fandom) - I screamed loudly for a few minutes. Just to make up for it, I made sure to scream when I saw the scene in question. And... I'm thinking about closing this thread on grounds that it basically became a flame war,
