Something I've noticed (as I'm sure everyone has) about anime (and other cartoons): They never change clothes! Why? I mean, every now and then, characters dress up for special occasions, but for the most part, they always wear the same outfit all the time.

I know, I know, it's just cartoons, but really. Would it be so hard to change they're one-suit wardrobe every once in a while? Like they do on Inuyasha (well at least Kagome shows up in a different outfit every now and then).

I agree with CB.I'm actually glad that the Inu Yasha characters don't change clothes.'Cause Rumiko Takahashi has a knack for making all the characters have the same hair color(black). So,if Kagome didn't wear her school girl outfit,I wouldn't be able to distinguish her from almost all the other girls.

the only anime that changes clothes is ah my goddess- cuz u can easily distinguish everyone! but rumiko takashi's art tend to look the same so the clothes must be the same.

every anime character got their own image and I think that it's pretty good that they dont change their clothes that often

just check gokus wardrobe on his way to namek (I think) only orange suits and blue boots

I Guess this has been said before.

The reason why Anime characthers "don't" change their clothes, it's because it's their trademark.

    For exampel:

Himura Kenshin, he's still has the purple / white outfit, from the OAVS, throughout the series and the seishouhen Oavs.

Belldandy, Goddess First Class, got her "trademark" because of her blue/white goddess outfit.

also, for the most part, if they're in a school uniform, it's what they wear most of the time anyways, so it's more believable to the japanese society.
and sometimes it's kinda the easy way out...it's a uniform, or it's just easier to have them be identified via the one outfit...lol

In Sailor Moon they change clothes, but you sometimes see the same clothes again and again, which is realistic. Come on, how many of you have 200 different stes of clothes, I sure don't. XD
In Fushigi Yuugi, Miaka couldn't really wear anything else. 1. The only link she ahd to her world were her clothes. 2. The last thing she wants to do is lose her school uniform (those thigns are expensive). 3. Have you seen the fashions back then. yuck. 4. she's seen washing it alot anyways.
I would give more example but meh...

Tho, I don't think Shinji needs to wear his uniform ALLLL the time. -_-; it's not even a good looking uniform....

As for cartoons out here (a bit off topic) it's because the animators are too cheap like oh I dunno Nickoloden *coughcoughheyarnoldcoughcough*

I know it's been said a few times already, but there is a reason to it. The creator of Rurouni Kenshin, at a convention panel, said that it's because most manga in Japan is aimed at younger kids than the American companies that release them aim them at. Kids remember who a character is easier if the character is wearing the same outfit all the time, which is why a lot of series in Japan have very few, if any, costume changes. Usually, the most drastic costume changes are when you can already tell who the character is because there is no one else like them (i.e. Ah! Megami Sama characters and Tamahome from Fushigi Yuugi).

I believe with American cartoons it's the same thing, since they're also aimed at young kids who might not remember as easily that Kurt Wagner is indeed Kurt Wagner and not some other character (in X-Men Evolution) if he's not wearing the same outfit most of the time.

I guess they do that to help viewers remember who's who. I have a hard time remembering the characters names, MAYBE because their name is in japanese;) , but if I wanted to talk to someone abt anime I tell them: That character who wears the blue shirt.
But most of the animes I've seen, like Fruits basket, have the characters clothes change, but not every single episode.

And sometimes it's the culture. For instance, not many characters in Inuyasha would own more than one outfit.

Would many people recognize Spike if he wore a different set of clothes every session? I mean, if you just saw a silhouette of Spike, would you know it was him if he didn't have the tight flood-slacks and the upended collar?

It's all (well, almost) a matter of association. You see a person enough times in the same clothes, and you'll be sure to recognize them, even if all you see is their shadow.

Then again, it's also about animation budget. Do you really think that it's cheap to be in the animation biz? Every little detail you see on the screen costs money. NOTHING is free in the cel, like in some movie sets. They'd have to have separate artists to actually be able to draw and design the new outfits, then have the in-betweeners draw in the new outfits for every animation. *NOT* cost-effective.

Aa!! Megamisama! (Oh!! My Goddess!) is a different matter, because if you're talking about the OAV, it's actually got a much larger budget. It's the same thing with the Ranma OAV, not every female character wears the same clothes throughout all of the set. They've got the money to spend for it, so they do it.

And if you notice, some anime actually has the seasonal school uniforms out. Really! Check out Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou) and you'll see that Yukino has a different school uniform style every few episodes. Also, even if she's wearing the same type of uniform (let's say, white shirt and plaid skirt), you'll see that the shirt often changes in style. I My Me! Strawberry Eggs is the same. As the seasons change, so do the school uniforms.

Original Video Animation. Or, Original Animated Video. Either way, it's OAV or OVA. They both stand for the same thing. And unlike aired on TV series, the budget is usually larger, so more detail could be flshed out. Also, unlike aired TV series, there can be more personel working on it.

Usually, too, that the level of detail and quality is much greater. Picture much clearer, and cleaner. You can see for yourself, comparing the Ranma OAV to the series by itself.

Oh, yes, they're better known to the Americanites (and others) as Straight to Home Movies. Like, say, those Disney sequels to their big hits.

I just want to point out that Spike does wash his clothes in Cowboy Bebop, which somewhat explains why that's all he wears (and they're near broke most of the time, too!).
