"Hey, for a vampire, you don't move very fast, now do ya?"

Rian glared at him with fiery red eyes. It was then she realized she had let her vampire side slip...she had to stop doing that! Closing her eyes briefly, she quickly, but with more difficulty than usual, pushed it back.

Opening her now gray eyes, she half-glared at Michael, "Oh, shut up. I'm not full vampire you know!" she said, with a hint of pride.

She walked to his side and wondered why he stopped, he seemed to be thinking. "Hey, what's wrong?"

Just then, Rian heard Reina call out to them and she quickly turned around.

"What? I thought she was with Leon. What, did he abandon her too?!" She then looked back at Michael and noticed he was walking towards the church without her.

"Hey, wait up!" Rian said moving after him. "Reina's not too far...she'll catch up...might as well see what this is all about first."

Michael heard Rian's reply, but he didn't hear it, too.
<Admit it... You have a thing for her, don't you?>
<I said shut up...>
<heh heh heh... The big, bad Michael... Feeling emotions... Must be... Confusing, right? You haven't felt those since... Oh, how long has it been? Over a hundred years? heh...>
<Shut... Up...>
<You... Telling me... To shut up? heh... Surprising... And to think... Just a few hours ago, you had no problem with me...>
<Well now you're getting on my nerves...>
<Live with it, boy... You should be thankful that I allowed you to stay... This body is rightfully mine... You know that as well...>
<Rightfully yours?! You stole it from me!>
<Stole? I took what I felt should be mine... And you certainly had no way of stopping it, that's for sure... And anyways, you seemed to be certainly fine with it... You certainly liked the power, didn't you? You crave power... That's why you want Darius... To have ultimate power...>
<Damnit, I said SHUT UP!>
Out of nowhere, Michael reared back and punched himself in the face. Slowly, he pulled his fist back down from his face, looking at the blood that was now on his knuckles.
<My blood...>
<Our blood>
Michael fell to his knees, clutching his head.
<What have I become? What kind of monster have I become?>
<You've become what you always wanted to be... And you're close to gaining the power you always wanted...>
<No... I don't want it anymore... I don't care... I've killed too many innocent people...>
<And you will kill more, too... Or I could always claim this body for my own, as it is supposed to be...>

 

As Rian followed Michael, she could feel he was struggling with something.

"What's wrong with him...he's in pain, he needs help...Why should I care! He's a filthy vampire like all the rest, let them suffer...but....I'm half vampire myself...it doesn't matter...yet...."

When he punched himself, Rian stopped in shock. It was then she sensed Michael's fresh blood, though extremely faint. Rian ran her tongue over her teeth. His blood...she could still feel it inside her from before. His vampire blood, it was probably why she felt the allure of having her vampiric powers more than usual. Nonetheless, it was pulsating inside her and...it felt warm.

Rian knelt down in front of him and the look from his eyes told her he was struggling with himself...a struggle she knew all too well. "Damnit...I'm beginning to like him...thats so not good."

She put a hand on his shoulder, "Hey, come on...What happened to the tough Michael from before? Can you even hear me? Listen, just beat whatever it is you're fighting against and lets go. I know you can do it." The last part she said gently, just above a whisper.

 

Raziel fell asleep while looking for Darius. When he awoke he was by himself. He could not tell where Roneri was or even where hr was.There wasn't even their scent near him.

How...when did this occur?


He did not remember falling asleep.

Darius watched as Athena approached him until they were almost face to face. Athena said: "Good day, Lord Darius. I am here to..."

"I see that your dark half is...coming around." Darius thought out loud. "I know what you have come here for. I welcome you with open arms. Once you perform a certain task, that is."

<Soon I must make sure that there is no doubt in her mind as to where her loyalties lie. But for now, I just need to make her lust for blood control her good side.>

"Follow me, I will lead you to this task," Darius said. He led Athena to an area where the humans were weak and plentiful. He traced the closest scent to a dark alley. A young girl, about this one's sister's age, sat quivering in the shadows. Darius tore the small child's throat open, wasting much, but it scarcely mattered. The effluvium of fresh blood permeated the air. "Feed."

 

Raziel walked to the building in front of him and got to the roof to see if he could find anyone.

When he got to the top he looked for hours and saw no one.
But just then he saw Lord Darius and some other figures he did not recognize. He walked toward his direction.

 

Luceid didn't even really seem to take note of the fact that Reina left. Sure he heard her and the whole nine yards, but he did't really catch on, or rather remember he was responsible with watching her for a while. He suddenly jumped up, swearing under his breath as he pulled off the head-phones. He started to dig through piles of clothes until he found a black leather jacket.

Throwing it on and sliding his arms through the sleeves, he hurried over to the freight elevator that went to the first floor, then out. Of course, he hadn't the slightest idea where she was or where he should even start to look.

"Though at least I can get more cigarettes," he told himself as he patted himself down, realizing he was out, causing him to swear even more as he stepped outside.

Leon watched as Reina ran in front of him. Luceid did not follow. <Where is he? I told him to take care of her...>

Leon watched Luceid leave his building now in a hurry. <There he is. Took him a while to realize what was going on.>

Leon ran towards Reina. He overtook her and began to run beside her. "Reina! Where are you going? Tell me, do you know what's happening?"

Leon felt a weak, confused species of fear. <What is it that gives me such a shiver? Does telepathy extend to this?>

Leon continued to go along with Reina.

Michael continued clutching at his head, trying to maintain control.
"Hey, come on...What happened to the tough Michael from before? Can you even hear me? Listen, just beat whatever it is you're fighting against and lets go. I know you can do it."
<Come on, Michael... I thought you were mister tough guy... Are you listening? Come on... Try and beat me... And then you can go... Or can you do it...?>
He heard both at the same time, and his body began to tremble.
"RRRAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! LEAVE ME!!! LEAVE MY BODY!!! IT IS NOT YOURS!!!!" Without knowing, he shouted this as loudly as he could.
<The restless spirits I felt... They were my own...>
<So what are you going to do, child? Fight and lose? Or give in and lose? Either way... I win... heh heh heh...>
<You... You took my life away...>

1958. Chicago, Illinois. USA.

A young man walks down a sidewalk, coming home from a hard day's work. His name is Seth Lemones. It is late at night. As he is walking, he hears footsteps behind him. He turns, but sees nobody, so he continues walking. Soon, he hears the footsteps again. He turns, this time shouting, "If anyone's there, I'd suggest not attacking me and trying to take my money! Cause I know how to defend myself! And I don't even have much money for you to take!" Feeling slightly safer, he began to walk backwards. After a couple steps, he bumped into somebody. As he turned, he apologized for not watching where he was going, but stopped midsentence.
<His... Eyes...> he thought to himself. The man's eyes glowed with the bright red of the fires of hell.
"What the hell?!" The man grabbed Seth's throat and lifted him into the air with great ease.
"What... Are you...?!"
"heh... You shall do well..." The man's voice was raspy, ragged, as it had been used for far too many years. Then the man tossed him to the ground. Seth tried to get up and run, but wasn't fast enough. The man was on top of him, teeth in his neck.
"Guh... agh..." The man let go of him, and stood, smiling.
"Your blood is strong... I like that... Your body shall make a good vessel for my purposes..." With that, he cut open his own wrist, and pressed it against Seth's mouth. The blood drained down his throat, and he was too weak now to stop it. And then everything went black...

<You... You took my life away...>
<Why yes I did... And what will you do about it? There's nothing you can do.>
<Oh there isn't, is there?>
Slowly, Michael rose to his feet. He turned to Rian, who was standing next to him.
<I think there might be a way... Well, here goes!>
He grabbed Rian, and kissed her.

 

*Athena*
<I refuse to do this> Athena thought <She is but a child... but I... I must control my darker half.>
Athena looked at Darius,then at the girl, and back again. She couldn't let herself do this. She closed her eyes, she was losing the control she had gained. With one last thought she lost, <Leon, Reina, forgive me.>
She drank then looked to Darius for orders.

*Reina*
Reina looked up at Leon and said, "I wanted to find out how my sister is. I hate being left in the dark."
They had reached Rian by then and said without looking up, "What's happened to my sister? Have any of you seen her since we all split up? I'd go back but I... I don't remember how to get back to her."
Reina then turned to look at Rian and noticed that Michael was kissing her. Reina reddened and looked away.

 

Rian froze in surprise, her mind a whirl of emotions.

"What the hell?! Why is he doing this? Why him?!!"

Though part of her wanted to slap him, she didn't push away at first. Rian knew he was struggling with a demon inside him and this could only be a way to deal with it...she supposed. Plus, though she'll never admit it, it felt nice in a way.

Rian parted the kiss and just looked at him in immense confusion and frustration. "What...was that?" was the only thing she could think of saying.

 

Raziel looked all over for Roneri but could not find her.
where could she be?

THen he caught a glimpse of her heading toward Darius.

He quickly ran toward her.

 

I'm back....

Roneri approached Darius, but she stopped as she saw Athena. She stopped mid-step. Something was different about her, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She ignored it for just a moment, "Lord Darius. I was afraid I had left you to die..." She looked at him, regret filling her face, "I'm sorry." She looked at Athena once more, "What is she doing here?" She asked, a little irritated with herself for not knowing what was different about her.
I'll figure it out later... she thought.

Raziel managed to get somewhat closer to her. When he suddenly fell to the ground with torture-like pain in his chest. He could not move not a muscle. He looked at Roneri, He tried to say help, but it was fate and no one could possibly hear.

He got some feeling back and dragged toward her. Each movement became worse and worse. He forgot that he was a vampire and that he used all of his energy up.

But just then he rememberd his phase ablility and went to the dimension of the dead...

He was weak there too but at least he could get his energy back and hopefully be ably to get some blood when he got back to the normal dimension.

 

Darius watched as Athena fed for the first time. He smiled triumphantly. <Now it is just a matter of time before she is another slave. This is the best blow against Leon, this is even better than him turning her.>

"Yes drink. It is the only way to satisfy the hunger." Darius said to Athena. "You can't escape it now, it is what you are. But with this hunger comes great strength. Stay with me and you will learn to use your new strenghts like nothing you could imagine."

Darius was so caught up in his victory over Athena's humanity,that he hadn't noticed that Roneri and Raziel had found him until Roneri spoke. "Lord Darius. I was afraid I had left you to die... I'm sorry. What is she doing here?"

"No need to be sorry, you did what any good vampire would do, look out for themselves. You should have known not to worry about me. I've been through worst." He then motioned towards Athena "As for her, I'd like to introduce you to our newest..." Darius stopped of when he Raziel collapsed on the ground. When Raziel started moving towards Roneri Darius felt a pang of jealousy and clutched his sword.

Darius then watched enviously as Raziel did something not even the Vampire King could master. The fact that this vampire emerging from nowhere, seemingly harmless, could phase into the death dimension angered Darius. He drew his sword but knew it would be futile to strike.

<What the hell are you doing, boy?>
It had worked exactly as planned. Michael took this chance to block the monster that wanted his body away for now, even though he knew he couldn't keep it locked up forever.
After a surprising amount of time, Rian finally parted.
"What... What was that?" she asked, confused. Michael turned, somewhat ashamed of himself.
"I apologize... It was the only way to catch him off guard... But it worked..." He looked down at his hands. "I'm whole again. For now, that is."
He faced her again. He could still see the confusion in her face.
"I'm sorry... You have no idea what I'm talking about... Hey, sometime, when we've got the time, remind me to tell ya." He then put his hand on her shoulder, and smiled. It was a real smile. One of genuine happiness, the likes of which he hadn't felt for over a century.
"But not to change the subject or anything... But you didn't try to kill me or anything for having done that... You know, that could mean lots of things... But I'm gonna leave that one up in the air, for now. We can discuss that later. But for now..." He turned back towards the cathedral. "I believe we were heading in that direction."

 

Raziel managed to get enough strength to phase out and walk toward Darius.

He noticed the look on Darius's face and was confused over what it meant.

Did he see me phase? He must be wondering how I can do that. I'll have to see if I can teach him, for it is very easy to learn. Raziel thought.

When he got up to Darius and Roneri he said,
"Did you see me phase? Would you like to learn? I'll have to warn you, it takes great strength and mind power to stay in the death dimension, and others."

 

"But not to change the subject or anything... But you didn't try to kill me or anything for having done that... You know, that could mean lots of things... But I'm gonna leave that one up in the air, for now. We can discuss that later. But for now..." He turned back towards the cathedral. "I believe we were heading in that direction."

Rian blinked then scowled at herself. How could she had let him do that without absolutely no punishment?! Why didn't she kill him?

"And what did he mean by 'To catch him off guard'? 'Whole again'?? By kissing me? You're right, I have no idea what you're talking about!! And hell yeah I'm going to remind you!!" she thought angrily to herself, "Well, whatever inner struggle he was having, he looks fine now...the bastard...."

Completely not noticing Reina and Leon nearby, Rian quickly walked towards the cathedral, hitting Michael upside the back of his head with her fist as she reached him, though not as hard as she could've.

"There's nothing to be left in the air! It meant nothing!" she said, angrily passing him by.

However, his smile was stuck in her head...which caused her to smile...which caused her to be even more angry.

At the entrance of the church, she furiously kicked the old doors open and stormed in.

 

Roneri glared at Athena. It was hard for her to believe. Athena...one of them? In her mind, she imagined what kind of vampire she would be. Either a saint, or a monster. Her questions had not been answered. She shook it off as Darius glanced behind her to Raziel, who, for just a moment, she no longer smelled. She glanced over her shoulder at him.
Strange... she thought, I could have sworn he wasn't there...
She had not turned around to see him phase. She looked at him, some what confused but she showed no sign of that.
For a moment she thought of asking him about it but stopped herself. She was curious about Athena at the moment.
She looked back to Darius, "Are you sure she can be trusted?" she asked, "After all, she is one of Leon's..." she said.

<Leon, Reina, forgive me.>

Leon's eyes widened. There was such a sense of regret, of loss and of despair in that thought. <She wants to find out how her sister is. I...I think I know all too well how her sister is. Gods, if Reina could only hear that last thought. I don't want to tell her. But if I shelter her now, she may be in danger later. I think I can wait a bit, but still, I must tell her.>

Leon gave a slow sigh. <What if she never had to find out, Aldoux? What if you go to Athena now, and save her? Reina doesn't have to witness the horrors of your actions.>

Leon shook his head almost violently, clearing the thought. <No! I must protect Reina. If I go to Darius, I will be walking willingly into his web. And if my heart beated still, it would ache because I know I would walk willingly into that web right now if I hadn't promised I'd take care of Reina.>

Leon ignored the fact that Michael was kissing Rian. Then, after a short interval, they were moving again. They had reached the Cathedral and Rian kicked in the doors violently. Leon stepped inside.

<I would say that this could be a sanctuary, that we could stay here, but I know that I could not rest easy. All is not quiet in this church of the dead. It disquiets me. But maybe there is merit in it. If this is what Setsaki spoke of, perhaps we can find something useful here.>
