Oh okay, I confused myself there, I guess. Didn't Sega-CD or something come up with it as a bundled game? I remember Out of This World bundled with SOMETHING. If it is Flashback, then that's probably why people thought it was????

I had the fade to black demo.. it looked rather nice

Anyway, I would still call Doom 2-d, compared to say Quake which was 3-d.

Why? Dup and down did not matter. You could not have a hallway above another in Doom. You could go up and down, but you couldn't have a bridge. In the end it was all one level, especially considering that you couldn't (or didn't have to anyway) aim up and down.

Doom is what I like to call 2.5-d :p Dark forces was 2.75-d You could have bridges, but couldn't look al the way up and down, and you couldn't have an opening right above another opening. Quake (and before it Descent) were 3-d

All of this is in a gaming sense, of course the monitor is 2-d no matter what you do.

I'm mostly certain you could look up and down in quake. At any rate, duke 3-d was also 2.75-d, like dark forces.

You could have bridges, and different floors, but you still could not have two openings right above and below each other.

Think of the first level. THere were a couple elevator shafts. At first glance, they prove me wrong, as the door into the shaft on the 2nd floor would be right above the door into the shaft on the first floor. THis would be true, except if you watch the map closely, there are 3 shafts. As you ride the elevator up and down, you are instantly moved into a different shaft off to the side a bit. You don't notice in game, and the effect is that it seemslike there is an opening above another opening. Still isn't though :p

you'll get no argument from me there :p I only use it cause it was pretty much the first of the fps games to be what I consider 3-d (despite coming after descent) From a gameplay perspective, quake was crap. Newest tech != best game

OMG... what are you saying! Quake is without a doubt one of the best multiplayer games I've played :)
We've been playing Quake (Clan Arena) in the LAN in college for 2+ years, and it has always been great fun... If you say you don't like it, then I guess you haven't had enough multiplayer action :)
That's the reason that quake is (was) such a popular game... They've even had Quake tournaments with prizes of thousands of dollars, which is much more than can be said for the other games mentioned :)

Maybe Doom 3 will turn that around

How much Quake deathmatch / Clan Arena have you played? The game came out in 96, and people still play it... and they don't play it because of the graphics...

    Quake: great game, excellent engine.
Quake 2: pretty much the same..not as brown
Quake 3: fantastic game, worse engine...horrible netcode leaving us 56kers in the dark

Im actually thinking the opposite Hamish..Doom 3 will be a fantastic engine, but the game looks slow paced and boring. It doesnt look frightening either. Better to look for psychological scares now rather than 'blood 'n guts' affair.

If Doom3 gets as much as slight jump outa me, ill be impressed. :)

Doom 3 will probably be like a slideshow, unless you have an awesome machine :)

System: Good old 8 bit Nintendo!
    Genre: Adventure! Yah!
Release Date: Late 80's (not sure! Sorry!)
Availability: Rare. (THAT ISNT THE DEVELOPER THO)

    Back to my home land,
    Its ravaged by monsters.
Off to the tree of life,
    Where the mythic folk roam.

Armed with magic and a dagger
Through the enemy I do swagger,
    Preists give me mantras,
So that i can continue later.

Well I haven't seen much of Doom3 except a few screen shots.
So I was just hoping that it would turn around the series.
    But maybe not.

I've played Quake on a LAN a few times. While it was enjoyable that was only because I played with friends. On the net it sucked.
And after a while it gets really repetitive and tedious.

A game I really want to play on a LAN is Operation Flashpoint.
    Now that would rock.

And I'm never going to play Q3 ever again.
Simpley because of the character animation. God it looked horrible.

flashpoint would rock. Doom3 will run like a slideshow at max res.. slower machine? tune it down.

Yes it will be slower, with fewer monsters. How this means it will be less scary is beyond me. Why does a game have to be fast to be scary? I think the shadows will be used quite effectively. Kairo, tell us how it goes if/when you finally play it. I'm betting it'll scare the tard outta me (of course if you sit back and think 'this is a game' it won't, but where's the fun in that?) RTCW crypt levels scared me. I actually stopped playing for amonth before I went on hehe.

Did someone guess the sidescroller Luvweaver gave the riddle for?

    Yes..

it was archangel Amada, with Flashback. And I think he posted his riddle already.

By the way, i think removing the 2D vs 3D posts and putting them in a separate thread would be nice. Any moderator around?

    Thx!

Magician? I rented that game back in the day...I don't quite remember a dagger or tree of life though, so I think I'm dead wrong.
