Don't like metal and never have. I was pretty glad when it 'died' and was replaced by alternative (which then became mainstream, and not exactly alternative, oh well, you can't win). ah, for the good old days..

*don't think less of you for liking it, I am just surprised it seems to have come back so strong

They're more rock than anything else, methinks.
I love this music, but it's way too depressing. It's like all the problems I see in myself, but broadcast to the world in song.
Really, though, it's the depressing stuff that I like the best. Look at Staind (my personal favourite). The sad music just has more emotion.
All that pseudo-angry-badass crap like Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock lacks the feeling that I'm looking for (they aren't bad musicians though).

    Here's some advice:
NEVER get really mad, then storm out of your house with a poratble CD player and walk across town in the rainy night while listening to Linkin Park. You'll go insane, plus catch a cold ... I don't know which is worse ... Don't do it with Open Your Eyes by Staind either.

    Linkin Park is really awesome, but extremely depressing when you try to relate to the music... I've tried before and I actually thought that I could until I questioned myself and concience and stuff and then I realized I was being weird :p:p but I have stormed out of my house listening to Linkin Park on my cd player and I really got ticked when my batteries died!! I didn't smash the cd player though...I tried crushing it but I couldn't do that either ^_^;

I would have smashed mine, but it didn't belong to me ... and I doubt smashing someone else's CD player would solve anything ... and of course, mine's too expensive for me to break ...
Ach! Back to smashing vases ...

So what's everybody's favourite song by these guys?
I gotta go with Papercut, mostly because "I'm paranoid, looking over my back, it's like a whirlwind inside of my head. It's like I can't stop what I'm hearing within. It's like the face inside is right beneath my skin!"

I dont think Linkin Park is that depressing , well compared to Staind anyways , staind is more like i want to kill myself type music , Otaru metal never died out man , you have slipknot and all these other bands now , Metallica is also good they started off heavy and got more mellow , Linkin's best song is In The End me thinks

Dude, Staind is quite emphatically NOT suicidal music. Allow me to quote:

Waste Written by Aaron Lewis, as performed by Staind

    Your mother came to me,
She wanted an answer only she should know,
    Only she should know.
It wasn't easy to deal with the tears that rolled down her face.
I had no answers 'cause I didn't even know you.
    But these words
    They can't replace
The life you, the life you waste.
How could I paint the picture?
Was life as bad as it should seem that
There were no more options for you?
    I can't explain how I feel
I've been there many times before.
I've tasted the cold steel of my life crashing down before me
    But these words
    They can't replace
The life you, the life you waste.
    Did daddy not love you?
Or did he love you just too much?
    Did he control you?
Did he live through you at your cost?
Did he leave no question for you to answer on your own?
Well f-ck them, and f-ck her, and f-ck him,
    And f-ck you,
For not having the strength in your
    Heart to pull through.
    I've had doubts, I have failed, I've f-cked up, I've had plans,
Doesn't mean I should take take my life with my own hands, but
    These words
They don't replace the life you waste.

Have you even listened to the lyrics? They're the most important part of the songs! Open Your Eyes is about the problems of society, Outside is a song for everyone who has ever been pushed around or oppressed, particularly by the poppy bullshitters who run things these days ... Go listen to the songs again, grasp their meanings, then try to call these songs suicidal!

Aaron Lewis once said that he doesn't think his music is depressing, but that it is realistic. At the time, I thought he was on crack, but it turns out I agree.

Im starting to like Linkin Park. My favorite song is ""In the end"

    IN THE END:

    It starts with one thing
    I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
    keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    All I know
    Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away
    It's so unreal
    Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, but didn't even know
Wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
    keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme, to explain in due time
    I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so (far)
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me (in the end)
You kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I

    Chorus

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    And for all this
There's only one thing you should know (2x) Chorus

    (so true :(.. so true :( )

in the end even your closest friend disappoints u :(

Anyone else notice that all the good rock these days is the dark and scary kind? The very stuff that I used to abhor is now my truest friend ... the irony is beautiful ...

Yeah, In The End is a great track, probably their best, all things considered, but still not my favourite. I always insist that it is their least depressing song.

As for Staind, I've said this many a time, but they are definitely worth checking out. They're like Linkin Park, but with more strength and conviction supporting them. Better sound, too.

I think dark and scary sucks. Why the hell would I want to listen to that?

I don't identify with it, nor do I want to. Why do I need one more factor trying to make me enjoy my time less?

In The End is really good and stuff but im gonna have to go with GNZ and say Papercut just because its got cool music and cool lyrics and the end of the song is really awesome(the sun goes down i feel the light betray me...). looks like we think there are only two good tracks on their cd, which isnt true but oh well...

I have to disagree, I used to like all the dark, scary and depressing stuff before it was popular, and not much has changed in the music since then. However, my tastes sure have, now, no longer do I have a deep urging desire to dive out my window at the drop of a hat, no longer do I brood silently in the dark. I rather like the alternative. Having seen both sides of this proverbial okonomiyaki, I like the special sauce side, you know, where it circles around in hearts and spells out happy messages. Ok, maybe the references are lost, but the point is there, I don't like not liking anything.

Here's a picture for you, It'll make you urge to greet such other fun-loving people as MO, Lady Aoi, Yokuburi Kinura, Matt, Cloud... the list goes on, but I stopped.

If that's not enough, there's an excited german waiting to greet you in my attachment.

In case you're wondering, I'm a big fan of J-Pop and J-Rock (9!110\/\/z 4-3\/44!!!@!). This discussion reminds me of earlier discussions with people about conformity... ("I'm going to be non-conformist, just like my friends!") but I'm not sure why. Anyhow, I'm done rambling, so Live! there's no reason to give up hope yet just because of a catchy beat!
