I'm going to have to go with Dragon Ball Z. The first parts with Vegeta coming to destroy earth was entertaining. But after that, it all went downhill by my standards. It got too repetative with the "Strong, new enemy, things look hopeless, one guy gets stronger and wins" routine. Besides, they started spending wayyyyy too much time showing them power up (a good portion of the Goku vrs Frieza episodes showed both of them flexing out and yelling "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!).

I have to admit, Yu-Gi-Oh is not as bad as everyone thinks. I'm not addicted to it, but then again i'm am not repulsed by this card anime. I guess i'm just indifferent. It occupies the mid-interest level along with a few other shows.

Overrated anime, huh? I can name a choke load of overrated anime!

Dragon Ball Z is quite overrated, but not cuz lots of people like it despite its shortcomings. I think cuz it's actually old, yet its being shown so much now, that people can say "Why do you like it so much? I've seen it already 10 years ago!" It's the re-run syndrome or something like that!

Rurouni Kenshin is also too overrated, probably cuz it's one of the few main samurai series around right now. My friend thinks it's awesome, but just like DBZ battles, some of the fight scenes tend to be wickedly long, with too much talking, and only a few fighting moves. I'm getting really tired of "dramatic fighting" in anime already. I mean, real fighting, like modern kung-fu movies, are more heart-pounding, intense, and "real." You'd think that with the freedom of animation, and with evolution of animation techniques, that animated fighting would have outdone real fighting, right? Yet most fight scenes in anime these days are still junk! And even though animated characters do incredible things, like slicing through boulders with a butter knife, or killing an army by running past them, those are all old ideas. That's probably why Kenshin doesn't impress me when he cuts huge, solid things up with his lil sword. To me, that's just superhumanly strong striking--not true skill/technique with fighting.

Chobits! Now there's a really overrated anime! I even watched 5 fansubbed episodes cuz of all the hype, but you know what? The funny-factor of the series isn't that funny, the drama part isn't that intriguing, and the "cuteness" of Chii isn't that cute (some people think she's extremely cute just cuz they haven't been familiarized with enough other cute characters). (People who argued against me about that weren't that good at backing themselves up.) And so you guessed how sickened I got when I see all these websites/blogs/xangas with Chobits themes, people with usernames named after Chii, etc. :anger: Some of those people are just like some Harry-Potter-lovers who've never even been exposed to other fantasy series, yet they truly believe Harry Potter is the best book series in the world.

Its difficult to post a reply on overated anime that hasn't been already been said. All I could say is that in terms of old anime like Gundam, Dragonball, and even Slayers or Eva, a person should keep in mind that a lot of the fanfare originated before a bunch of spinoffs, ripoffs and assorted crap diluted and in some cases ruined the entertainment value of the franchise. Here is a few examples.

The dragon ball series as a whole is overated but the original series was not from what I have seen.

The gundam series is somewhat overated because a lot of the newer stuff has become more and more flashy and less dramatic. Still, parts of it still live up to the hype. War in a Pocket was a great OVA.

Macross was in general is a great franchise. For those who saw Macross plus or Macross 0, you know what I'm talking about. Macross 7, the 40+ series of absolute crap, was not.

I can't comment on much else since I don't know much about what other people think of the series that I watch.

A lot of people are turned away by the anime of Chobits. Heck, I agree with you there. The Chobits anime, in my opinion, stinks. I've read all the manga, 8 volumes, and it is the the most amazing manga ever. It's much more funny in the manga. And Chi is ten times cuter. Not to mention the anime is so boring, sometimes cheesey, and is FAR from capturing the drama and mystery of the Chobits manga. I mean, I really don't like the Chobits anime, so maybe it is overrated. But not Chobits itself is a great story that's full of absorbing mystery and sadness, and sometimes light humor. Please people who think it's overrated- Don't watch the anime. It's so disapointing.

...I hate you. (hehe) Give it credit it was an 80s show. True, it was designed for younger viewers but the story depth is quite incredible. I thought this cartoon show was a classic. I will never forget the joy it brought to me when I was a child. One criticism about it is character development. There were quite a number of transformers which only appear swiftly within an episode... more like a cameo appearnce and you don't get to know them properly. But story-wise it was great.

    Yugio
    Transformers
    Sailor Moon

Now Dont get me wrong but sailor moon is a clasic and isnt half bad, but all the plots are the same. Evil vilan, fight vilan with powers, while in high heels, win and get emotional, the end. After about 10 episodes you just dont care.

    And if anyone says Yu Yu Hakusho is bad. . . . . .. . . . . .AGGGG!!
IT is Awsome! I do admit though that the animation is of poor quality but the story and charecters are truely unique.

Yugio danm kids show. . . . .Stupid as ever.

Tansformers. . . . What the hell is with that show? Its almost as stupid is power rangers! And isnt that one of the shows that deals with flashing lights and gives people Seizures?

Errrr... no, unless you're referring to some other show. Does 'autobots' and decepticons' trigger off any brain cells? Coz if you havn't the foggiest what they are, it's the wrong show

Actually, the "seizure show" was Pokemon, oddly enough. In one episode that wasn't shown in the US (for obvious reasons), Pikachu's eyes flash rapidly as he gives a thunderbolt. This caused most of Japan's children to go into seizures. Many people are confused by the Simpsons episode in Japan, where they watch a show similar to Transformers and it gives them seizures. Matt Groening was making two generalizations about anime that should not have been mixed.

While I agree that Yu-Gi-Oh is a kids show, it is still entertaining. It does have a plot, you just have to watch more than one consecutive episode to get it, and many do not think it is worth their time because it's on WB and Cartoon Network. It's still a good show.

I would say that the most overrated show I have seen is Chobits. Loved the Manga, but the anime took too long to take off, and it wasn't executed as well.

I personally would say (not even mentioning the american commercialized shows, for they go without saying) DiGi Charat. I just have absolutely no idea whats going on any of the time. Its like Excel Saga, but without a guy who pulls twin machine guns out of his afro. That, and the Love Hina anime. Sorry, but it just doesnt touch the Manga.

For the record, my favourite manga`s are; .hack, rurouni kenshin (series and OAV`s, but more so the OAV`s), the macross plus OAV`s, Evangelion (still) and FLCL.

    ..
    ..
Sorry Kamui, but thats just plain hilarious :D

If you think that plot is laughable, then you obviously have absolutely ZERO knowledge of Japanese history.
And sorry if there`s too much blood for you. Incredibly, blood is the result of cultural revolutions and all it`s realistic depictions.

Do some background checking before opening your mouth next time, because conrgatulations, you`ve just succeeded in making yourself look a class-A idiot.

ummmm dragon ball z.....toonami never takes it off, and every body talks about it....soo yumm yah
    {edit} Ok the reason why it is over rated it becuase its story line never changes and it just repeats its self. I mean think about it...the Cell Saga was the bet (in my opinion) and then the Buu Saga came out and it was the same gosh darn thing...I havent seen the full GT Saga yet...but that is starting to differ from the other sagas....Now dont get me wrong...I love DBZ..Its a great show...but I think that it needs to stop repeating its self and get a new story line!!!{/edit}

Hey, I have nothing against kid animes, the reason i dont like them is because of the weak sotryline... if you want storyline, go for X/1999 (read the mangas first)

On a side note: I am proud of everyone of you here!!! No one has mentions X/1999... cus if anything... this awsome series/manga is underrated.

Hey, I love X/1999. It definitely has a much deeper plotline than any anime I've ever seen. I was just saying that many people don't see the plot of Yu-Gi-Oh because they only watch one episode and don't see the plot. It's there, just real hard to find. They rarely mention it. When they do, it's usually in one of the big episodes.

But I agree that X/1999 is underrated. I watched it and loved it.

I think you guys misunderstood DS there, don't think that whatever he say might be rudeness of him, thoughm he is full of rudeness -.-; [Don't hurt me!!] heh, jk :)

Anyway, I saw few episodes of Sailor Moon, didn't like the subbing =/
    I was barly able to watch it, I don't think I can stand to watch it all to say what I truely think of it -.-;;

And I hope I won't get killed for saying this, but its my openion and I am free to say it since it won't cross the line; I think its for kids, specially girls =/ Or it could be that I am more as a tomboy than a 100% girl :p

In my opinion, DBZ is probably the most overrated anime I've seen. It has gotten so popular, especially with immature people that enjoy it just because it's violent. Now, don't take me wrong, DBZ is a good show (DB's better though...), it's just that I've seen better. And the plotlines are quite repetative, i.e.:
-Frieza Saga - antagonist tries to rule/destroy world
-Andriod Saga - antagonist makes evil andriods to try to rule/destroy world
-Cell Saga - antagonist makes evil biological organism to rule/destroy world
-Buu Saga - antagonist makes a...thing...to rule/destroy universe, which 'thing' reappears later to try to rule/destroy universe again

An example of the protagonists could be:
-Saiyajin Saga - get more powerful/hope powerful person comes back to life
-Frieza Saga - get more powerful/hope powerful person gets there in time
-Android Saga - get more powerful/get powerful person healthy
-Cell Saga - get more powerful
-Buu Saga - get more powerful.

I know it gets deeper than this, but there are much better shows than this. And yes, I have seen all of DBZ (although it was a while ago and I could have remembered multiple things incorrectly, as well as forgotten the quality of the show...).

Oh laws.. a topic like this is begging to become a flame war. For something to be overrated, it must by definition have a lot of people who rate it highly. Those people wil not enjoy being told that it is not as good as they think it is. This thread might as well be titled "Why the anime you all think is great really sucks."

Not that I'm above it all.. FLCL overrated? perhaps thanks to CN showing it over and over. If that is where you saw it (complete with ****ty voices) I pray for your soul :D Dragonballs is of course the king of overrated. Or, dare I say it, Cowboy Bebop? hahaha

Tenchi Muyo! has always seemed overrated to me. Sure, it was funny. THE FIRST TIME. After a ton of Tenchi series running on the same jokes, it got old really fast (especially when the funny material wasn't anything that I hadn't seen before). I know a lot of people who swear that TM is the best thing on Earth, but I just can't buy that.
