Ah, straight from the back of "The New American Bible". This is quite interesting: "The doctrine of the Blessed Trinity was not precisely stated in the Old Testament, but there are certain allusions to the plurality of persons in God." I also found this in my Catechism of the Catholic Church concerning the trinity: "We worship one God in the Trinity nd the Trinity in unity, without either confusing the persons or dividing the substance; for the person of the Father is one, the Son's is another, the HolySpirit another; but the Godhead of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal." Unless this should be interpreted a different way, I find this to prove why that portion of the Creation story reffered to God with plurality.
This would be true, except these books were written long before Christianity existed. They were written by people who, at the time, did not believe in the plurality of God. And to elaborate on my comment earlier: royalty often referred to themselves in plural third person, i.e. "We are not amused!" It was often used by the royalty who was full of themselves (Louis XIV-XVI, for example).
Actually, according to Genesis, the devil placed himself in the garden in the form of the snake; it wasn't God's doing in the story.
*consults Bible* Umm... whoops. :sweat2: It never references Satan at all, just that it was the serpent that tricked Eve. So, I suppose we're both somewhat wrong; it never says God knew the evil intentions of the snake when he put it in the garden. Although, then that infers that God isn't omniscient... Dunno! *shrug*
Basically, the snake or serpent in the garden doesn't represent evil, it represents temptation. It was Satans way of challenging God's creation to see if they were flawed. God made man in his imagine, but Eve was made from Adam and therefore would be more vunerable to the ways of the serpent. Or maybe I wasnt really paying enough attention in my 12 years of religion classes. Victor
So basically...ur trying to say that women are easily more tempted than men? One of my friends did bring about this subject....she said that women supposedly suffer more....only because it was eve.that ate the fruit...it did get me thinkin...though and it does make some sense. Anywayz.... But if i was makin two clay models i would make sure they were exactly the same no difference at all.
I believe in the following theory: This may sound stupid, and geekish, but some people think that "God" is not one omnipotent deity, but that "he" is actually a whole race of enlightened beings. I am one of those people. I mean, what if God were actually a race of astronauts who found our planet and decided to enlighten the primitive beings they found there? I mean, I believe it is incredibly possible. Just imagine a cave-man spotting a ship or something coming down from the sky. These cave-men, who most likely treated the sun and the stars as "gods", saw something come down from the heavens and started worshiping these "beings from the sky". Then, these aliens taught our race how to build the monuments we see in Egypt and many other countries. And as time went on, our people recorded these "miracles" that the aliens performed. These "records" probably became the Bible or what have you. I would post more of this theory, but it's late, and Im tired.
I've thought about about what TruDestinyBreak said. It would be totally possible for an advanced race to create all of the feats and occurances from the Bible. Heck, people from 5 centuries ago would have looked upon an F-16 jet as some kind of banshee from the sky raining death and destruction on those below. How would they have known that it is just a jet? Some people believe that evidence for life outside of our planet is shown in Ezekiel. Sounds somewhat iffy to me, especially after hearing some of the wild predictions that follw. But then again, i'm in no position to flawlessly understand it. Here's a link: Ezekiel 1:1-28

The he reached out his hand and took the knife TO slay his son. This was brought up by my friend. It says TO it doesnt technically mean that he did it. Anywayz i told him that means that we can easily fool god because of this if it was true.
He only stopped because a frickin' angel told him "ok, good enough"! So you've backed yourself into a wall - either God is psychotic, or God indeed is not perfect (or he would not be fooled) and can commit evil and be psychotic anyway.
Maybe he knew that he would kill his son for him and thats why he stopped him. And earlier you said that you didnt think god is perfect when i brung the topic "can god create a rock he cannot lift." So theres a high chance that he might not be perfect and rather not psychotic.
The fact that God would even request that is disturbing regardless of whether or not he carried through with it. Given his racism and habit of demanding war and bloodshed in his name, Biblical God -is- psychotic.
Drastic things call for drastic measures. This may have been the only way to see if he had true faith. You seiously have a point there.....nothing to argue about here...
but if god is omnipotent.. he wouldn't have had to test the faith.. and if faith means that much to god, that he has to put his people through such hardships... perhaps he has some abandonment issues he needs to take up with a counsellor
? I think that it depends on the person. You have to have blind faith to believe in him. Or you have to have seen him or something. I though believe in him to a certain point. It's questionable he's there yet it's also shout out he's right in front of us. peace
What do you mean "to a certain point"? If I'm in Los Angeles and I shout out to my mom in San Francisco, that doesn't mean she's with me or that she can even hear me.
whoa! I've just spent ages scanning through this thread and i have to say i'm impressed. However, so far you've agreed that there is/is not a god/goddess/plural of same, that he/she/they are all-powerful/just imagination [delete as appropriate]. !!! If i were to say that there could be a power in this universe, some kind of energy that everyone and everything's linked to, could that be what some call god? what would you say? And it's possible that having faith in something, regardless of what or who, can provoke people into doing amazing things. unfortunately, some are terrible things, which are inexcusable (just look at the incas - they sacrificed 200 children every time they crowned a new king). i'm not really sure on this point, but please feel free to expand it! oh, and i believe in a power i call god
