I am currently trying to gather more information about the rumours surrounding a live-action NGE film.

I've heard several different things, but haven't seen any articles or news coverage about it.

I've heard that both Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Hailey Joel Osment (6th Sense) are going to be trying for the role of Shinji.

I don't think that either really fits the part, and would be sort of disappointed to see either of them in the role, but I know this will have the effect of drawing people who just want to see these famous actors.

What are some of your thoughts on this?

Also, if anybody has found any articles or any sites with information about this movie, can you link me, please?

 

well i'm not crazy about the idea but i don't dislike it either.
i would hate to see harry potter doing shinji, i already hate shinji, don't make me hate him more

 

Sounds like this could shape up to be one of the biggest mistakes in film history.
Of course, given my thoughts, opinions and theories concerning Gainax's intentions with the original series, I'll stay out of this one.

I know Shinji is a pathetic whiny little *****-****, but... not THAT. Anything but that. Even that little cocksucker Haley Joel Osmond. But... Not THAT.

 

Haha! There is no way I'm watching Shinji being played by a boy with an English accent. No offense or anything. It just isn't right.

 

I just pray to God that they will at least get a good Asuka actor so we can all watch her yell at that at the @$$, because he sooo deserves it. the kid couldn't act if his life depended on it.

 

Of course not--who would be stupid enough to stick a series into 2 hours? And what's wrong with bluescreen? CG technology multiples in greatness with each passing year, so it's gonna be better than anything that came before it (or should I say, it BETTER be good).

Most liveaction anime has sucked but that's cuz the producers sucked. I hope these big boys (ADV, those CG guys, and all that cheese) can bust some mean skills with no excuses. I'm not much of a fan like Chejo, but if this movie pulls it off, I'd like to watch it.

As for actors an actresses, they BETTER put 14 year olds. I'm tired of seeing grown men portraying teenaged boys, and busty bimbos trying to be little girls. I know that sex appeal sells, but with Eva we just want sci-fi action/adventure, so we don't need a macho protagonist surrounded by voluptuous co-stars. As for Shinji, shouldn't they stick in a Japanese boy instead? I mean, they're situated in Japan right? Ohhhh, they better not change the location to some US place. Cosplayers of Eva suck cuz they naturally don't look like the characters. I'm tired of seeing Rei Ayanami's who weigh more than 160 lbs. If only people were to realize that thin is in (at least in animes), then those plug-suits would be fine cuz the actors and actresses would be the correct age and size.

Yeah, I think they should put an R-rating on the movie if it's gonna be made at the same maturity as the series. (Mortal Kombat should've been rated R or NC-17 or X, cuz then we'd get to see some trademark fatalities.) I'd rather see a title made properly for the demanding audience than make it kiddie for that so-called transfer of the Harry-Potter fan-base. I'd also support no-name actors/actresses, especially since I'm really not a fan of any who are popular.

Yeah, I'd rather see an Asian-American actor play the part of Shinji, since he's supposed to be a Japanese boy in Japan. (What are they gonna do, change the location of the story?) I'm sure the story for the movie is gonna be based on the concept of the series (the concept of the Angels and the Eva units) rather than the individual episodes.

 

If your really interested, there is an article with pictures from the Live action eva in Newtype Magazine, the July edition (with Shinji on the front.) There were quite a few pictures and models and such... so I think it's definate. But I NEVER heard Haley Joel Osment or Harry Potter would be in it. That must be a crazy rumor... please say it is...

Why, hello Evangelion Death and Rebirth! Oh, how do you do, Macross Do You Remember Love, the single Macross movie that utterly destroyed the continuity Macross had! Whats up Ghost in the Shell, which while good is still outclassed storywise by the manga! Whats up, Akira, which size-wise is NOTHING next to the manga.

I rest my case.

Theres nothing inherently wrong with bluescreen..... until its used excessively. Look at the acting in the Star Wars prequels. It sucks. Know why? Because the actors are surrounded by blue walls and talk to ping pong balls. You can only do so much with so little.

ADV doesn't actually make stuff, it just distributes stuff.

 

Oh ok, I thought you were just against it altogether. I see what you mean now, how too much can take away the performers' acting skills. But of course CG effects are gonna be used for the Eva movie, like in fight scenes. (I mean, I wouldn't wanna see some old-skool stop-motion-animation, or worst yet, slow-motion guys in suits pretending to be giants!)

Despite that, Akira the movie was still trippy when it came out (and many people still think of Akira as an anime masterpiece, so actually it was successful even if it wasn't what true fans preferred). It's hard to compare manga to anime, since they're different mediums, each with its own specialties that creators can, should, and/or will concentrate on. But as long as there's enough similarity in gestalt, like you can feel the essence of the original, then a transition from manga to anime, or anime to live-action, should be enjoyed and respected. Just like GTO, although obviously they had to tone things down to make things more realistic.

 

Live action huh, that sucks. This reminds me of the live action Gundam incident I still havent watched that movie and I don't think i ever will.

 

It may sound bad at the moment.. but as long as the actors are right and they dont do it for a pure money grab then who knows.. It may become a cult classic.. Or It may Burn it hell..

Only time will tell.

I think Seraphinx's point was that they won't squeeze everything that happened in all the episodes into 2 hours. He wasn't saying no one would make a 2 hour movie out of a series, I mean FFS, we are talking about a possible NGE movie: a series made into a movie. Yes, the series will obviously get stuffed into a movie, but what I think he was saying is that they won't do it in such a way that every episode is in there with 6 minutes per episode. (and now the 6 minutes for episode 14)

ie, it won't follow the series plot exactly, won't have ALL the events of the series, cause you would be stupid to try to stuff all of that into two hours. That means cutting stuff out of course, and that kinda sucks too. Oh well. It would be best to think of it as a reimplimentation, or another take on the story.. Incidentally, This all makes glaringly obvious how badly movies suck compared to a series, with plenty of time to develop a plot and characters.

Anyway, I kinda doubt that a movie with main character everyone hates could do well in the mainstream over here..

 

It could be all much much worse at least it is being done by ADV a company that knows and likes hte series and not some big company such as WB or FOX

 

Well at least it is done by ADV (for the few people who don't they are the company that released Eva in the US) so they know what the movie sould be like no what if a company like WB or Disney*twitch* did they would ruin it unlike it is like The Little Mermaid
